The Wild Coast may be South Africa’s most spectacular and peaceful region with its rocky coastline, indigenous forests, secluded coves and many river mouths. All of this is on your doorstep at Umngazi - an award-winning family resort and spa. The thatched bungalows are situated amongst the indigenous gardens which provide the perfect setting for a totally relaxed holiday.

Each of our thatched bungalows is tucked away amongst indigenous flora, on a green hillside providing more views than most eyes can take in. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself perching on the doorstep for hours, simply watching the waves beyond while birds forage and bicker in the bushes around you. Our homely cottages will make you kick your shoes off, undo your top button and put your watch aside. For slightly breathless honeymooners, there are our tranquil, private bungalows perfectly positioned to help you forget all about wedding speeches and guest lists.

Of course you may want to be out most of every day. You could spend the whole time dozing by our riverside pool, or hanging out at Basil’s Bar where darts, snooker and tall stories will make you feel like a regular in no time. In our lofted hillside spa, we’re lucky enough to have dedicated and professional therapists who will gladly massage away your city stress to the soundtrack of nothing but breakers and bird calls. You might find relaxation in other ways; in the gym, on the courts or on a long amble down our pristine beach. For parents in need of a break, our dedicated caregivers are always on hand.

All meals are included with your booking. What’s more, we’re not shy with our portions - bigger is better. Kick off the day with an unhurried river breakfast as you loosely plan out another day filled with the sights and sounds of the hospitable Wild Coast. Later, sample our menu which offers up versatile meat dishes, fish so fresh it melts in your mouth and refreshingly good salads and veggies.

The Spotted Grunter Resort is nestled between two mountains, Mount Thesiger behind the resort and Mount Sullivan across the river. These two mountains form the heads at the river mouth that flows into the Indian Ocean. Port St Johns is really known for its fishing, especially grunter, salmon or cob and garrick. We therefor had no choice but to call our piece of heaven next to the Umzimbubu River, The Spotted Grunter Resort. Our peaceful, small and exclusive paradise is just waiting to be filled with happy faces and families having a good time and enjoying themselves.

Our luxury log cabins are fully equipped with microwave ovens, gas stoves and fridges. We also provide bath towels and toiletries. There are fans and heaters in the bedrooms and lounge, and we have safes in the cabins for your valuables. We provide tea, coffee, sugar and creamer, and there are TVs in all our cabins with local or DStv channels.

The cabins consist of a kitchenette, an open-plan lounge and dining area, and a bathroom with gas-heated water showers. All cabins have their own braai area and private deck and each cabin also has its own secure allocated parking. We are pet friendly, and there is a cabin which is wheelchair friendly as well. Rates can be provided on a bed and breakfast or full board basis.

The Anglers Arms Bar is a fully licensed watering hole, with a wide variety of beverages and snacks. We also have a pool table and darts board. Our restaurant serves a wide variety of dishes and you can enjoy your meal inside or on our deck overlooking the resort and river.

At our reception, you will find a small bait and tackle shop where you can purchase everything needed to go fishing. We also stock the necessities like toothpaste, deodorant, bug repellent, shirts and a small selection of kid's toys, and you can purchase everything needed for a braai at reception.

As we are situated next to the Umzimvubu River, you can easily sit on our river bank and do some fishing. We also have a small jetty and boat launching slip way, so you can bring your boat along.

    Port St Johns South Africa

    Port St Johns Resort Accommodation
Port St Johns is a small coastal town in South Africa known as the Jewel of the Wild Coast, offering true warmth and hospitality. The Wild Coast is a 250 kilometer stretch of coast, gaining its name by its inaccessibility and reputation for ship-crushing waves. Today the Wild Coast still remains relatively untouched, offering rich rustic experiences and adventures.

The Wild Coast is the coastal area of the easterly Transkei region of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It perches alongside the massive Umzimvubu River which has carved its way through the ancient rocks leaving two 300 metre ramparts towering on either side.

Port St Johns also offers a unique blend of cultural richness. The Xhosa culture, both traditional and modern, is always apparent. You can see a sangoma (traditional healer) strolling along in all his finery, hear the thumping sound of modern kwaito music from a furniture store, and dodge the ever-present mini-bus taxies. This vibrant noise and colour is contrasted with some crumbling reminders of a colonial history. In the streets you will hear Xhosa, Afrikaans and English as well as foreign languages from the steady stream of tourists seeking the unusual.

Dense bush encroaches into the town at any opportunity and a short walk will take you into silent forests. The sea is always close, crashing onto the rocky shores which guard the secluded beaches. Bask on the unspoiled beaches or take part in one of the many eco-friendly adventure trails on offer. Port St Johns offers comfortable and authentic South African accommodation and some unique activities.

Poenskop Beach to the north of Port St Johns is one of the most isolated. A few huts will be passed en route, but there is nothing except Africa out here. Fishing out of the rocks on the south side of the river produces good catches of Garrick and Kob in season.

Eagles nest is the cliff that overlooks the town. A brisk walk will take you to its summit in about an hour. The Cape Herms Lighthouse is the property of Spoornet, and celebrated its 100th birthday in 2005.

Silaka Game Reserve is about 6 km out of town where you can take a walk or game drive for beautiful game viewing and bird watching.

First Beach is the fishing beach just at the river mouth. It has big rocks where people can climb on top when they are fishing. It is where the lighthouse is located.

Dolphin and whales can be seen all year round, but are best seen during the months of June and July during the annual sardine run. Dolphins can be spotted all year round. Often playing in the surf at Second Beach. Porpoise and Bottle Nose dolphin are a common sight. Rare sightings of the more uncommon species such as Heavy side dolphin and Risso's dolphin happen out at sea, during the Sardine Run.

Umngazi River Valley - The common belief is that Umngazi (Mngazi) means "Blood" but linguists believe that it refers to thorn trees in the valley, "Umga". This river also opens to the sea through a wide lagoon. It is popular with fisherman and water sports enthusiasts, and also superb for bird watching.
