Port Elizabeth All the rage for swimming, sunbathing and body surfing, Hobie Beach is the venue for the annual Splash Festival as well as the Beach Volleyball and World Boardsailing Championships. The calm seas, blissfully warm water (between 18 to 21 degrees in summer) and beaches patrolled by professional lifeguards provide the perfect combination for a family holiday. Hobie Beach is a good choice for swimming or simply sunbathing but if you’re a water sports junkie there’s no end to the thrills here - choose from scuba diving, windsurfing, kiting, surfing, jet skiing or surf skiing.At low tide the Shark Rock Pier side of Hobie Beach is a great place to explore, offering sheltered rock pools with interesting inter-tidal sea life. Kids love spending time here looking for creatures like starfish and octopus. Hobie Beach is situated in Summerstrand which is an ideal base from which to explore Port Elizabeth and its beautiful coastline.

Humewood (11.3 km from Port Elizabeth) Kings Beach is the most well-known and safest beach on Port Elizabeth’s coastline. Boasting a 2 km white sandy stretch, surf lifesaving club, paddling pools, kids playground and fresh water pools. A power craft launch area covers 300 m of beach next to the launch strip.
The MacArthur's Baths Pool Complex is situated along the Kings Beach Promenade. Voluntary lifesavers are on duty over weekends during summer and professionals during the week. Facilities include public toilets, changing rooms, ample parking and beautiful gardens set between lush lawns.

Humewood (12.1 km from Port Elizabeth) Humewood Beach is one of Nelson Mandela Bay’s numerous golden sandy beaches offering excellent swimming and amenities. Lifeguards are on duty from November to April during the peak holiday season (Blue Flag season).
Facilities for the disabled are outstanding. This includes special wheelchairs that can be used on the beach and in the sea. Lifeguards are ready to assist if required.
A promenade runs along the beachfront linking the beach, swimming pools and facilities. Shops and restaurants are in close proximity.

Wells Estate (13 km from Port Elizabeth) Well’s Estate Beach is situated in the northern part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Precinct. This blue Flag Beach is great for kids and boasts well-maintained water slides and paddling pools. Facilities are excellent and lifeguards are on duty during the summer holiday peak season.

Schoenmakerskop (14.1 km from Port Elizabeth) The pretty coastal village of Schoenmakerskop is perfect for families offering a number of picnic spots, coves, rock pools and a few small sandy beaches. The sandy coves provide safe paddling for little kids. Look out for playful schools of dolphins who frequently surf the waves.

Wells Estate (14.9 km from Port Elizabeth) St Georges Strand is Port Elizabeth's most northern beach stretching all the way up to the Coega Harbour breakwater. A long jetty heads out into the sea from the sand dunes. Although the water is blissfully warm, take care as surf conditions can be dangerous. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer holiday season. Be prepared to walk a fair distance to the beach from the parking area.

Summerstrand (15 km from Port Elizabeth) Pollock Beach is yet another beautiful Sunshine Coast beach that stretches from the Summerstrand lifesaving club to the beacon at the bottom of Admiralty Way. Beachcombers will find numerous shells walking along this wild shore. There are some good snorkelling spots close to the Humewood golf course - rated one of South Africa’s Top 10 Golf courses.
Pollock Beach is favourite for swimming, sunbathing and body surfing. It also offers sheltered rock pools with interesting inter-tidal sea life.
Known locally by surfers as the "Pipe" because of its excellent waves and surfing opportunities. It is the first place to pick up swell and the last place to loose it. Pipe is a sand covered reef that delivers a very descent left as well as a right.
Along the beach you will find a cyclist path and new walkway stretching from within the dunes all the way to Hobie Beach and the Boardwalk.
The Summerstrand Village Shopping Centre with a Pick ‘n Pay family supermarket, several restaurants, banks and gift shops is close by.

Sardinia Bay (15 km from Port Elizabeth) Sardinia Bay is easily one of Port Elizabeth’s most scenic beaches and best for long walks. It’s a popular surfing spot but is known to be dangerous for swimming due to strong rip tides. Dog walkers and horse riders also favour this spacious sandy beach. Picnic places, braai spots and ablution facilities are available so pack your picnic basket and spend an entire day chilling here with family and friends.

Beachview (27.6 km from Port Elizabeth) The attractive beach at Beachview is situated on a section of Port Elizabeth’s coastline that is fantastic for long beach walks. Beachview is a good place for beachcombing and to start hiking to the next beach at Maitlands. Lifeguards are on duty during peak season but swimming is not safe due to strong rip currents and backwash.

Maitlands (30.9 km from Port Elizabeth) At the mouth of the Maitland River lies a magnificent bathing beach backed by huge sand dunes stretching for about 5 km West from Beachview to beyond Blue Water Bay.
Kids love the dunes for tobogganing and sand boarding. Maitland River Beach is ideal for leisurely strolls along the waters edge where you can collect sand mussels.

Blue Horizon Bay (38.5 km from Port Elizabeth) Van Stadens Beach lies at the mouth of the Van Stadens River and has a wonderful lagoon for swimming, fishing and paddleboats. Tall dunes offer some fun sand boarding. The river is suitable for small boats to navigate upstream to the gorge. Lifeguards are on duty over the peak holiday season.

Colchester (38.6 km from Port Elizabeth) The estuary of the scenic Sundays River with its spectacular sand dunes and views of Algoa Bay is a knockout. Situated at the southern boundary of the Addo Elephant National Park, the Sundays River Mouth is calm and peaceful and offers a relaxing and memorable experience.
The beach is pristine with some of the highest dunefields in South Africa. If you're visiting this area, a wonderful thing to do is go cruising on the Sundays River Ferry. The double decker ferry features a raised viewing deck which is a great place from which to watch the bird life along the river banks and game in the bush.

Jeffreys Bay (71.1 km from Port Elizabeth) Dolphin Beach is home to the legendary surfing spot Supertubes, known as the best wave in Africa and one of the top five right-hand breaks in the world. And it’s also home to Billabong Pro, now a qualifying series.
Achieving Blue Flag status, the beautiful wide sandy beach is very popular with families and holidaymakers. The Jeffrey’s Bay Shell Museum, a public information kiosk and a number of restaurants and shops are very close.
Dolphin Beach is great for lengthy beach walks, stretching all the way to the Gamtoos River and beyond. There’s also an amazing reef to snorkel on calm days.

Paradise Beach (76.4 km from Port Elizabeth) Paradise Beach is a long sandy beach situated between Jeffreys Bay and St Francis Bay. It’s actually a suburb of J-Bay but is relatively untouched by development.
Surrounded by nature reserves and estuaries, you can often spot tiny buck, tortoises, numerous birds, rabbits, mongoose and otters – all much loved by locals. It’s an awesome place for windsurfers and kite boarders with good wind all year round. A not-yet-discovered windsurfing and kite surfing spot!
Paradise Beach is one of the coastal towns where you are guaranteed to spend a relaxing day on a pristine white beach. The name explains it all – it really feels like paradise.

St Francis Bay (85.2 km from Port Elizabeth) Holidaymakers from across South Africa come to to enjoy the beautiful golden beach and attractions of St Francis Bay.
Excellent water-sport facilities in the ocean and at Kromme River, pristine nature reserves and the historic lighthouse all contribute to making this one of the most magical locations on the Sunshine Coast.
