A Little Farmhouse is situated in a leafy, wind-free glade which takes you back in time. The cottage is tranquil and comfortable with only the birds and sheep in the distance, while having easy access to shops and restaurants.

The old Dover stove makes for fun cooking and the forest bath and shower is a romantic way of stargazing with a glass of bubbly. This is comfortable farm living with only the tame animals for company. You can spend your days lazing on the large patio with a book or choose to partake in a number of activities in and around Stanford. Horse riding, paddling on the river, birdwatching, hiking, eating at the country restaurants are a few examples.

The unique little village of Stanford, overlooked by the moody slopes of the Klein River Mountains, lies just inland of False Bay, forming the tip of a triangle with the coastal towns of Hermanus and De Kelders. Peaceful and largely unaffected by change, Stanford is an eclectic mix of shops, galleries, restaurants and coffee shops, and the list of activities for a largely rural village exceeds one’s expectations.

When in Stanford, go to the Birkenhead Brewery, a boutique brewery open for beer tasting and lunches and the Stanford Walking Trail, which wends its way along the banks of the Klein River through the town and offers visitors some wonderful glimpses of the many birds in the area, including the endangered Blue Crane.

Schoone Oordt Country House

Sleeps 26 in 10 rooms

Schoone Oordt Country House is a charming country hotel in Swellendam South Africa, possibly the...
Schoone Oordt Country House is a charming country hotel in Swellendam South Africa, possibly the best of Swellendam accommodation, with 10 luxury bedrooms set in lush gardens, an intimate Conservatory restaurant, a sparkling saltwater pool and a passion for people, family, food, wine and the environment. The emphasis here is on unpretentious, unaffected luxury, elegance, quality and acute attention to detail.

There is something quite magical about this striking Victorian Manor House. She has been lovingly restored over many years by Richard and Alison Walker and is passionately run by Sonette and Wander (pronounced V-un-derr) Bester. As a result, she has been instilled with charm and grace and she adores welcoming guests.

Her extensive grounds house two standard and six luxury rooms, a quaint, private family cottage and a romantic and secluded honeymoon suite set in abundant gardens and sheltered by aged oak trees. Each luxury accommodation has conceded to every modern convenience whilst unique, restored (mostly by Richard) antiques, retain the Victorian feel of the Manor House and a bygone era.

The Manor House itself boasts the most exquisite light and airy conservatory, which Richard built in true English style, a cosy fire-lit bar and lounge, an intimate dining room and a typical country kitchen. The warmth of the original wooden floors, ceilings and doors coupled with many quirky antique pieces creates a wonderful welcoming ambience and guests are encouraged to ‘kuier’* here.

Meals are made with love and served with true Schoone Oordt flair and style. The freshest best quality produce from small local suppliers is sourced as organically and ethically as possible, as well as fresh herbs and occasional veggies from the garden. Breakfasts are traditionally a gourmet affair and our little country hotel has developed quite a reputation for them. Complimentary afternoon tea with home-baked savoury and sweet goodies is served overlooking the garden on sunny summer afternoons. In winter, complimentary snack platters and a warming welcome drink are offered on arrival. Intimate, delicious dinners are served in The Conservatory Restaurant where guests can enjoy a carefully prepared, sophisticated South African menu with wines sourced (by Sonette) from the celebrated verdant regions surrounding Swellendam; Robertson and Hermanus. Talented Chef Wander is well on his way to building The Conservatory Restaurant into one of the finest of Swellendam Restaurants.

Schoone Oordt Country House has been created with a vision for Swellendam weddings and special occasions. Choose from the intimate and private boardroom with views of the mountains, the sun-drenched conservatory overlooking the grounds or the cosy, slightly more formal dining room in the grand old house. She is truly an extraordinary venue for an exclusive occasion filled with laughter and love.

The Swellendam area offers guests an abundance of activities. Hiking, horse-trails, bike-trails, watersports as well as visits to the nearby Nature Reserves are a must. A trip to the De Hoop Nature Reserve for seasonal whale watching cannot be missed, a short journey over the Tradouw’s Pass to quadbike in Barrydale as well as a day trip wine-tasting in the Robertson Wine Valley. Along with a nine-hole golf course, quaint coffee shops, the renowned Drostdy museum, berry & lavender-picking, good restaurants and a feast of art, Swellendam spoils its visitors for choice.

Schoone Oordt Country House is a gracious old dame with heart and soul and she invites you to visit, soon.

In Suurbraak, on the other side of the river, is the quaint self-catering cottage, “Bibi’s Joy”, belonging to Peter and Bibi Present. Its appeal lies in its solitude and the fact that the mountain is its back-yard. This set-up is ideal for the avid outdoors-person, as mountain-biking, hiking, cross-country running, cycling, and even swimming and canoeing depending of the water level of the river, can be practiced with ease.

Bibi's Joy is as promising as its name suggests. Accommodation comprises two en-suite bedrooms with double beds and bedding. There are eight sleeping stretchers available for the kids. The sunny and spacious living room comprises a fully furnished lounge with fire place and kitchen with Dover Stove, fridge and crockery and cutlery. Wood is included, and there is also a gas stove. Outside in the tranquil garden there is a carport for one car and misters for those hot summer days. Our neighbour will take care of you upon your arrival, and you are free to contact us at any time should you require any further information.

The charming cottage has a lovely garden with many indigenous plant species and ancient oak trees. This is a haven for birders, as even the odd kingfisher is spotted on the property. Hoopoe’s, the Cape robin, a variety of sugar birds, fiscal shrike, forktailed drongo’s are found here. Goats, horses and cattle on the adjacent plots add character and complement the country feel. One of the reasons the main gate must be kept closed at all times.

Nestled at the foothills of the lush and beautiful Langeberg Mountains, lies the picturesque little town of Suurbraak. Just outside of Swellendam, Suurbraak is home to a small farming community of hearty people and is the charming thoroughfare of the DC 200; a popular annual cycle race.

Tangleberry Cottage Self-catering

Sleeps 4 in 2 rooms

Tangleberry Cottage is situated 45 minutes to an hour from Cape Town and 30 minutes from Cape Town...
Tangleberry Cottage is situated 45 minutes to an hour from Cape Town and 30 minutes from Cape Town International Airport, it’s a self-catering retreat recently established and fitted with excellent cooking equipment and food preparation utensils that would please any gastronome, chef or cook. The two bedroom-en-suite cottage, accommodating a maximum of two couples, is located in a romantic setting in the heart of the Elgin Valley. It’s completely private, partly encircled by a lake and surrounded by an edible landscape of almonds, walnuts, pecan, avocado, mango, fig, cherry and various fruit trees all newly planted.

While waiting for the dough to rise for the absolutely sinful ‘chocolate babka’ that you’re planning for breakfast on the 2.5-meter x 1.5-meter granite island top, take a look at the landscape and you’ll see the Groenlandberg and Hottentots Holland Mountains in the North East and the Olifantsberg mountains in the South West, a mere bird’s throw to Hermanus and the frolicking whales. This perfect backdrop should inspire you to create delicious dishes with your gathering of fresh ingredients.

Watch the wild ducks waddle across the green lawn or paddle in the dam in front of you while you lunch on your enviable bounty. You don’t have to look far to spot the hundreds of bird varieties that live and visit Elgin. And if you want to work up an appetite for dinner, meander along the many walks and hiking trails available. As drinking and driving is prohibitive you’ll find that your walks will conveniently lead you to several nearby wine estates. On your way back to Tangleberry Cottage, just as the sun starts to dip, you’ll experience the country fragrances, dewy fresh grass, the intoxicating aroma of honeysuckle and the sweet blend of various nectarous flowers, all of which will wrap you in its narcotic embrace. So intoxicating will the experience be, it will begin to stir up thoughts of the evening’s gastronomic pleasures.

After the first winter rains, forage for a variety of wild mushrooms that are strewn across Elgin’s’ forests floors. Chocolate-scented Pine Boletus are so delicious in puff pastry tartlets. Or, pan-fried in garlicky butter and tossed with Pappardelle and freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Otherwise, sip wine while stirring up a fragrant risotto.

You may choose to toss the tea out of tea-time and rather, sip Champagne or an excellent Cap Classique while twirling your toes in the lake from the jetty’s edge. And if the weather turns chilly, sink deeply into the buttery-soft leather sofas placed invitingly before an original two meter wide wood burning fireplace conveniently equipped with an overhead steel bar with cast iron pots for the comforting casseroles or potjies you love to cook. The homely feel is continued in the local hand-made terra-cotta tiles complemented by American oak wood paneled floors.

And when all your senses are replete, you’ll be sung to sleep by the chorus of the singing cape ghost frogs while snuggled up in quality percale bed linen in the comfortable queen-size beds.

The southernmost tip of the mighty African continent is only two hours’ drive from Cape Town and is the place where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet. The ruggedness of the area is mirrored in the name “Agulhas”, meaning “place of needles”. In keeping with this, the Agulhas Country Lodge is built from local limestone and blends beautifully into a hill overlooking the spectacular oceans. The lodge has several relaxation areas – a cigar lounge, quaint pub with an air force maritime theme, a TV room with paintings of shipwrecks, a lounge area and glass clad balcony with spectacular sea views for whale watching. The friendly staff who are very service orientated, take great pride in preparing gourmet country style dinners which are served in the romantic candlelit restaurant.

The menu which varies daily and is complimented with a selection of South African wines. The wine list features the southernmost and newest wine region in the country, right on our doorstep – in the Elim, Bredasdorp, Napier region of the Overberg. Fresh fish and seafood bought daily at the nearby harbour in Struisbaai are a specialty and the emphasis of the food is to serve delicious, honest and local fair, prepared with the freshest ingredients. The restaurant also serves traditional South African cuisine with a modern twist and local organic venison and pork feature regularly. Tables are elegant, decked out in white linen, Carol Boyes cutlery and cut glass crystal but the atmosphere is relaxed, with fires blazing in winter to add to the romantic atmosphere.

All eight rooms have sea views from the balcony, two have direct sea views and the honeymoon rooms with their Jacuzzi baths and double open showers are very popular. These also offer views of the varied fynbos and excellent bird life on the property. Beautiful embroidered percale linen, original art and antique Cape cottage furniture enhance the homely atmosphere. Four rooms have three-quarter twin beds two of these are family rooms with three beds each and the other four have queen size double beds.

The honeymoon rooms have an entertainment centre and mini bar. All the upstairs rooms have air conditioners and all rooms have panel heaters. There is a new beauty salon with a resident qualified beautician to offer massages, manicure- and pedicures, waxing and all the normal therapeutic treatments. Swimming at the longest uninterrupted white beach in southern Africa at nearby Struisbaai is a popular activity in summer and is safe. Agulhas offers two tidal pools within walking distance and the second oldest light house is a brisk walk away. Also don’t miss the eco coastal safari through the Agulhas National Park or a sea excursion for deep sea fishing or simply for pleasure.
