Quaggasfontein Private Nature Reserve is a private game reserve where wildlife and their environment are as important to us as our guests. We are proud of the tame nature of the wild animals and strive enthusiastically to maintain this state of affairs in order that game may be viewed and photographed in their natural habitat at close range. The landscape consists mainly of vast open plains spread with numerous hillocks, hills and plateaus with magnificent stone outcrops.

Guest accommodation comprises double bedroom suites, each with a private bathroom with a bath or a shower. A guest suite with an adjoining room are situated adjacent to the Manor House, making it an ideal family room. Between the Manor House and the Cottage, is a separate suite, adjacent to the swimming pool and the pool bar and games room.

Quaggasfontein is currently home to two of the Big 5 game types that exist wild in Africa, namely the White rhino and the buffalo. Other species to be found include springbok, Red hartebeest, Blue wildebeest, Black wildebeest, eland, letchwe, Mountain zebra and impala. There are also sable, warthog, Mountain reedbuck, Common reedbuck, aardwolf, aardvark, caracal, and ostrich.

On-site activities include daily game drives, game walks, tennis, swimming, darts, table tennis, pool table, croquet, visits to the von Plettenberg beacon site, star-gazing, and visits to the Bushman rock etchings.

!Xaus Lodge is owned by the Khomani San, Bushmen and Mier communities, is the first fully catered luxury lodge located in the Kgalagadi, Kalahari Transfrontier Park. !Xaus Lodge is a 24 bedded thatched luxury lodge that has been crafted to blend into the landscape of this remote wilderness area.

Situated on the red dunes of the Kalahari it overlooks an enormous salt pan from the privacy of the deck of your own chalet, you can observe the animals drinking at the waterhole below. The name of the lodge, !Xaus, meaning heart in the Nama language and phonetically pronounced Kaus, derives from the shape that lies in the pan below the lodge. Of greater significance however is the spirit of reconciliation encapsulated by the name !Xaus. The lodge and its specific location is the positive outcome of a land settlement agreement reached between the South African Government and South African National Parks with the Khomani San and Mier communities to whom the land originally belonged before its incorporation in 1931 into the then Kalahari Gemsbok National Park.

!Xaus Lodge offers visitors an opportunity to experience the scenic unspoiled splendour and the remoteness of the vast and arid Kalahari wilderness; to be drawn into the fascinating rituals, traditions and historical cultures of the Bushmen, the remarkable first people of southern Africa; and at the same time enjoy the comforts of a luxury lodge that captures the essence of the Kalahari. Whilst wildlife, much of which is seen on game drives from the lodge, is plentiful and the black-manned lion is one of its icons, this Transfrontier park is also a bird-life paradise with two-thirds of the raptor species of southern Africa occurring within its boundaries.

But the real heart of !Xaus Lodge lies in its spirit and its people. The experience of an African sunset, the sound of silence as day turns to night and the feeling of being able to touch the stars, provides a feast for the senses and the soul. Guests are invited to accompany the Bushmen, the legendary hunter gatherers, as they track through the desert following the spoor of animals, identifying the plants they can eat or harvest for medicinal purposes and locating their water cache, buried to ensure that they are not overcome by thirst in this harsh environment.

!Xaus Lodge truly is an integral part of an ancient African land which, when seen through the eyes of the Bushmen, is mystical, magical and spiritual. Laurens van der Post Ends.

Kalahari Trails is situated on a private nature reserve just 35 km south of the main entrance gate to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park at Twee Rivieren, in the heart of the red Kalahari dune fields. Here we offer visitors a unique chance to wander on foot through this awe-inspiring landscape, where the sky and the rolling sand dunes give the impression of limitless space, and the bowl of the heavens stretches from horizon to horizon.

At Kalahari Trails, visitors can experience a Kalahari that they would not see from a car. Although all local game species are present here, as well as nearly 200 species of birds, it is the small creatures that make this desert so unique. Join us on our guided walks and drives and come to learn about and appreciate the amazing bio-diversity of this region.

Kalahari Trails offers a wide range of accommodation at reasonable prices. The main guest house commands impressive views of the Nossob riverbed and the dune fields stretching to the horizon. The house features a large veranda where guests can sit in comfort and visitors are also welcome to use the braai facilities.

For bird-watchers, there is a small waterhole in front of the house where flocks of desert birds come to drink every day. We also have a small botanical garden with typical plants found on the Reserve. For those chilly winter evenings, there is a large, comfortable living room with a fireplace as well as a small dining area seating up to 12 people. Kalahari Trails is set up for self-catering, but groups can be catered for if we are given notice of this at least 10 days in advance.

There is a large communal kitchen which is fully equipped with everything necessary to store and prepare your food, including refrigerators, freezers, gas cookers, a microwave oven, toaster, all cooking utensils, dishes, cutlery, and glasses. We also have a small shop selling basic foods, snacks, a wide array of soft drinks or beers, meat, and wood for braai fires. We recommend that guests bring their fresh food with them because this is difficult to obtain in the desert. Upington has several supermarkets with a wide choice of available foodstuffs.

Kuruman is one of those special places endowed with incredible picturesque scenery and a unique beauty. All of this is attributable to a natural fountain in the centre of Kuruman, known as ‘The Eye’. It is a small water calabash with bubbling water.

Chapman Safaris Game Lodge is situated approximately 4 km outside of Kuruman on the Kathu Road. We boast a comfortable harmony between nature and wild animals. We have eight comfortable rooms with either queen-size beds or twin beds and the rooms all share bathrooms with showers. The rooms are equipped with TVs with DStv and air-conditioning.

Enjoy exclusive privacy and supreme views. This is the place to relax your mind and spirit, and game viewing is available. There is a legend attached to this distinctive trick of nature that says that those who drink from the crystal clear spring may never want to leave Kuruman, and it’s no surprise to learn that the little village is thriving or that it is known as ‘The Oasis of the Kalahari’.
