Brush up on Botanical Art at Kirstenbosch this September
Come and experience the incredible diversity and talent of
local and international botanical artists. Botanical works are created with the
intention to mimic the full glory of nature and the works produced, like nature,
are pleasing to the eye. With this in mind, the Kirstenbosch Bienniale aims to
focus on the natural splendour of South Africa's indigenous plants,
highlighting both the complexity and simple beauty of scientific
representations of nature.
The exhibition is held by the South African National
Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), who believes that it is important for all
people in South Africa to be more aware of our natural heritage. With one
quarter of the world's species of flowering plants under threat of extinction
in the next 50 years there is an important message that these artists are
delivering. The exhibition helps to deepen the audience's appreciation and
enjoyment of our biodiversity through the medium of art. The beauty and
fragility of the natural world are expertly captured in plant portraits. SANBI
has the duty to inspire audiences to conserve what we have; and the show partly
fulfils this function. The show also provides a space where the best examples
of botanical art can be viewed and reviewed, where individuals artists'
contributions and innovations can be assessed, acknowledged, receive accolades
and most importantly, be appreciated and debated by the audience.
Need to know? Entrance is free to the exhibition but you will
need to pay the entrance fee for Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.
