The Artist's Cottage is situated in the centre of the little town called Sutherland. The cottage is a typical Karoo-style building, but it has been renovated with modern flare without losing its authentic feel.

Sutherland is situated in the Northern Cape, just a stone's throw from the Western Cape's border, and is known for its clear skies, stars and its cold temperatures in winters, which can drop to below zero and snows occasionally. The town is also steeped in South African history, endemic succulents and amazing architecture.

Sutherland is home to SALT, the Southern African Large Telescope, which is the second largest optical telescope in the world. The town itself is quaint and quiet, but there is more to it than just visiting the observatory. The Artist's Cottage is ideal for that weekend away from the city, and spending some quality time with family.

The house contains two bedrooms and two full bathrooms, and comfortably sleeps four. Downstairs has a bedroom with a double bed and en-suite bathroom. An open-plan dining area, kitchen and big fireplace, built in the old-fashioned way and is big enough to climb into and sit next to the fire, is available. The kitchen has a fridge, a small gas stove, a microwave, and all cutlery and crockery that you may need. Upstairs is a loft bedroom, which is accessible via stairs inside the house or outside of the house. The room has a modern open-plan bathroom with a loose standing Victorian bath, a separate toilet and enough space to sit and read.

When entering the Tankwa Lodge in Calvinia, visitors are still welcomed with true warm country hospitality. Formed in 1851 on the Oorlogskloof River and named after religious reformer Johan Calvin, Calvinia lies at the foot of the dolerite-topped Hantam Moutains. “Hantam” being a Khoi word meaning “where the red bulbs grow”. It is the region’s key growth point and one of the country’s largest wool-producing areas.

The Lodge offers accommodation in 25 comfortable rooms all with en-suite showers and bathrooms. Seven of the rooms are air-conditioned, and the other 18 rooms have fans.

There is a splash pool for guests to cool off in the summer heat. In addition, the lodge has a restaurant and bar which is independently owned and operated, a beer garden and secure parking.

A four-bedroom guest house with countryside charm and atmosphere. Perfect accommodation for up to 10 people. Sutherland is nestled in the Roggeveld Mountains. They say we are the coldest town in South Africa, but at Sutherland Guest House we will warm-heartedly welcome you.

This is a typical Karoo-style house built with stone and sporting a big verandah and thick walls. The house is suitable for two to 10 people and may be hired to a group of people who would like to do self-catering. We can also spoil you with a lovely farm-style breakfast. The rooms have their own bathrooms and the beds have electric blankets for those chilly winter nights. Each room has coffee and tea facilities. In the big lounge and dining room you can relax in front of a warm fire and forget about all your troubles.

Sutherland is known for the Southern Africa Large Telescope at the observatory, a mere 15 km from town. You can do a day or night tour at the observatory, but bookings are essential. The museum, the birthplace of the Afrikaans writers and poets, NP van Wyk Louw and his brother, EG Louw is also worth a visit. The Dutch Reform Church, with its beautiful organ and history of the Anglo Boer War is a must see. Our fauna and flora, the place of the riverine rabbit, rare butterflies, sutherlandia and many more flowers in spring will amaze you.

Primrose Cottage

Having travelled around the world together, Denise and her husband David, amateur astronomer and retired tour manager at the Observatory, now welcome you to their stone cottage on grounds dotted with fruit trees and grapevines. Private lazer star gazing can be provided on request.

There is a double room en-suite and a twin bedded room with private bathroom. All rooms are equipped with heaters and electric blankets for those cold winter nights. We also have undercover parking for all vehicles to shelter them from the frost. There is an excellent music collection and an extensive library for those who want to relax and experience the snow in comfort. An authentic English breakfast is provided in the yellow wood dining room.

Take time to relax on the drive from Matjiesfontein, enjoy the Karoo scenery and stop occasionally to listen to the silence. The climb through the Verlatenkloof pass is stunning, after which the telescopes at the observatory can be seen quite clearly on the eastern horizon. Sutherland has become well known for the Southern African Large Telescope, inaugurated in November 2005 at the already world-famous observatory. Visitors should take advantage of one of the regular, extremely interesting tours of the observatory telescopes including the visitors centre and the SALT project.

For those interested in history, there are military graves in the Boer war cemetery and a tour of the NG church where the soldiers were billeted is a must. A door containing graffiti written by the soldiers can still be seen. Sutherland is also the home of the Louw brothers, well known Afrikaans authors. Their house is now a museum.

For the birdwatcher, Sutherland has a species count of 191, more than 20 of which are endemic. Most of these endemics can be seen within the grounds of Primrose Cottage at the right time. Let David and Denise identify these birds for you and of course point out the constellations visible in the incredibly clear night skies over Sutherland.

Rugged kloofs, high mountains and dramatic landscapes that sweep inland from the Orange River,...
Rugged kloofs, high mountains and dramatic landscapes that sweep inland from the Orange River, divulge the fact that you are now in the vast mountain desert that is the Richtersveld National Park, an area managed jointly by the local Nama people and the South African National Parks. This is a harsh and unpredictable land where water is scarce and life-sustaining moisture comes in the form of early morning fog, called ‘Ihuries’ or ‘malmokkies’ by the local people, which rolls in from the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean, sustaining a remarkable range of small reptiles, birds and mammals. A staggering assortment of plant life, some species occurring nowhere else, is to be found here, with gnarled quiver trees, tall aloes and quaint ‘half-mens’ keeping vigil over this inscrutable landscape.
