The Retreat is an old Victorian farmhouse in the lovely Groenfontein Valley conservancy, bordering on the 129.000ha Swartberg World Heritage Site and situated 20kms northeast of Calitzdorp on a scenic, winding gravel road, 59kms northwest of Oudtshoorn, and 38kms southwest of the Cango Caves, on scenic winding gravel roads, just off the magical Route 62. The guest rooms in the outbuildings, previously the school where the Schoeman children were educated, the cart-shed turned wine-press, or even an ox wagon used by earlier generations, have been suitably furnished to give you a unique experience of the outdoors.

Built in 1905 by Sidney Herbert Adley during the 'Ostrich Feather Boom' this magnificent Victorian home was bequeathed in 1948 to the orphans of the Second World War. Mr/s Macmoran tended 16 Polish orphans until they completed high school in the early sixties. It was then sold. We bought it in 1989 and undertook the arduous task of restoration.
