Fish River Lodge in southern Namibia is the only lodge perched directly on the rim of the Fish River Canyon, offering guests breathtaking views of the canyon from sunrise to sunset.

Twenty spacious chalets are positioned along the rim with sufficient distance between each other to ensure privacy and quiet at all times. Dry-packed stone walls cover the outer chalets and large windows offer light and views over the canyon whilst at night, guests can watch falling stars through the rooftop windows above. Each chalet has a separate shower, dressing facility, double basins, toilet and fan, whilst an additional outdoor shower offers a chance to cool down under the stars on warm nights. An outdoor 'bed' is available to guests who would like to sleep under the stars.

The main lodge caters for indoor and outdoor living given the extremes of weather that can be experienced throughout the year. Good home-cooked food with stylish touches is served on glowing handcrafted tables from reclaimed wood next to crackling fires in winter or outside on the deck in summer. Drinks can be enjoyed in the indoor or outdoor bar area overlooking a swimming pool.

Experience first hand the geological forces that unfolded 300 million years ago, when the Fish River began to etch its way through hard quartzite, forming a Canyon 90 kilometres long, 549 metres deep and 28 kilometres wide in some places, making it the world's second largest Canyon.

Alte Kalkofen Lodge is situated 100 km west from the small historical town Keetmanshoop en-route the main tar road to Luderitz in the Southern part of Namibia. The lodge is set in a beautiful natural African garden where vast open spaces effortlessly combine with the rocky desert area.

The lodge itself offers 10 bungalows as well as two rooms in the farm house, all overlooking large camel thorn trees growing in the river bed. The lodge features its own restaurant where breakfast is served daily. The restaurant is also open to guests for light lunches and home-cooked evening meals.

The area is historical, with many museums, and the lodge itself is a testimony to this. The name Alte Kalköfen, is derived from two old lime ovens situated on the farms Simplon and Sandverhaar. Both ovens were built in the early 1900s with the purpose to produce lime that was used for construction and agricultural purposes.

Relax in a quiet family atmosphere at this cosy guest house in the heart of Keetmanshoop, Namibia. Gessert's Guesthouse offers seven comfortably furnished en-suite bedrooms.

All the bedrooms are spacious with remote controlled air-conditioning and TVs. They are lovingly decorated and all lead to the beautiful, shady garden with its sparkling swimming pool as the centre. The hosts, Elma and Hendrik Knouwds, are proud to offer guests their comprehensive and stylish breakfasts.

There are good restaurants close by as well as a museum in the old church where the illustrated history of Keetmanshoop is on display. Worth a visit is the old Kaiserliche Postamt built in the year 1910, which now houses the Tourist Information. About 13 km northeast of Keetmanshoop, lies the spectacular and much photographed Kokerboom or Quiver Tree Forest on the farm Gariganus. The site has been declared a National Monument.

The Quiver Tree or Kokerboom is indigenous to the hot and dry southern part of Namibia. The plants are succulents and can reach a height of up to 9 m. They have adapted to the extreme environmental conditions by storing water in their trunks. The tree only blossoms for the first time after 20 to 30 years and can reach 300 years of age. The wood is very light and spongy inside, and because the trunk and branches can be easily hollowed out, they were used as quivers by the bushmen who formerly inhabited this area.
