Just 40km south of Colombo, Kalutara is a busy coastal town with a lovely long beach fringed by a selection of upmarket hotels. Situated on the Kalu Ganga estuary, the former spice-trading centre has an interesting history influenced by Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial rule.
