Kafue National Park Travel Guide

Bongwe in The Kafue - The Kafue National Park and its surrounding game management area really is a garden of Eden.. and a jolly big garden at that! It is approximately the size of Switzerland and offers a myriad birdlife and game. Its unique selling point is, to me, the fact that it is still known. You can go there and feel truly in the wild. No other vehicles or aircraft or noisy boats. For the purist, this is the park to be. Stunning views, great climate (it is a little cooler than Lower Zambezi and Luangwa) and incredible wildlife sightings. I suggest you go soon, before it becomes too developed. It is still wild and beautiful in its rawness.

McBride's Camp - A 3-hour drive from the last village over a shocking road, and there is the camp, well sign-posted, on the pristine Kafue River. We camped so arrived fully self-contained including firewood and drinking water. The camping facilities comprise hot and cold running water (the donkey was well attended by camp assistant, Patrick), fed to 3 ablution facilities each with separate shower, basin and toilet; washing area (sink with hot and cold running water). The camp islocated on a termite hill so there is dust, dust and dust. But also large shady trees which the birds love. Game roam freely through the campsite although we only saw an elephant. Puku buck grazed nearby and leopard spoor was evident in the morning. No prowling hyenas, baboons or monkeys made this camp a welcome change from some in Botswana's national parks. Gracious, informative hosts were a mine of information as was the Zawa game scout who was required to accomopany us when we left the camp. Activites included game drives (we drove ourselves with the Zawa scout or you can go with McBrides), bush walks and a boat cruise on the Kafue River. Worth the effort of and pounding from a very long drive over shocking roads to see Puku (local to the region, I believe) and an African Finfoot (bird) on the river.
