This easy hike is a delightful adventure in a beautiful nature reserve. Follow the stream in the kloof (gully) between the mountians, past many crystal clear pools. Stop along the way to enjoy indiginous fynbos, to swim or bathe the sunshine on the rocks. Stop and turn back when you feel you have gone far enough - each spot along the way is beautiful enough to be the destination. You will feel spiritually refreshed.

Helderberg Farm Blue Route starts in the forest and then ambles through the vineyards and up the foot of the Helderberg Mountain. At the top is a fabulous lookout point. This particular route is also ideal for mountain biking. Helderberg Farm Trails are open daily from 08:00 – 18:00. Hiking permits are available at the kiosk. Duration: 3.5 – 4 hours Difficulty: Moderate (steep uphill) Distance: 9 km

The Helderberg Farm Brown Route takes hikers up along the top of West Peak, presenting dramatic panoramic views over Somerset West, Strand, Stellenbosch and the Cape Peninsula. From here, there is an option to walk to the Dome, the highest point of the Helderberg Mountain. Helderberg Farm Trails are open daily from 08:00 – 18:00. Hiking permits are available at the kiosk. Helderberg Farm is situated in the foothills of the Helderberg Mountains between Somerset West and Stellenbosch. On offer are five interconnecting hiking trails, giving hikers the choice of over 20 km of scenic trails with various levels of difficulty. The Green Route footpath through the forest is suitable for young kids as well as elderly folk. There is a picnic and braai area close to a playground and tea garden. An overnight hut is situated 1 km from the starting point right in the forest. Helderberg Farm Trails are open daily from 08:00 – 18:00. Hiking permits are available at the kiosk. Route C in the Assegaaibosch Nature Reserve is a circular trail to a beautiful wildflower garden that showcases a wide variety of fynbos species. There are some lovely picnic spots on the banks of the dam. Note: If you plan to picnic here, you are no longer required to book. Entry is strictly on a first come first served basis, as the capacity is limited to 60 people per day. Light meals are served at Chaplin’s Coffee Shop. Route B starts at the picnic site by way of the junction signs before returning to the start. Don't miss visiting the freshwater aquarium at the Assegaaibosch conservation station.
