It’s a pity about the plant and plastic pollution. Best to avoid Sunday mornings with the incessant noise of motorbikes.

Hartbeespoort Dam is far enough from Johannesburg to be on vacation. There is much to do and see including vacation shopping (always on my list). The only downfall is the deterioration of the roads.

We crossed the dam wall and closed the windows immediately after opening them, to avoid the smell. The water is disgusting. It smells, it is green and I would be very careful not to touch that water as I am sure you will get a decease that nobody has ever heard of. If you stay further away from the dam, the view is spectacular the calm of the bush around you is just so relaxing, but if you can avoid the dam. Mango and de Vette Mossel are two fantastic restaurants.

I think it's a great destination, but I believe SOME of the guest accommodation providers should be scrutinized and appropriately rated, so as to avoid disappointment and giving Hartebeespoort a bad name.

There is so much to do in Hartebeespoort and its very close from Johannesburg and Pretoria. Whether its for a day, weekend or a short vacation it's perfect. There are lots of Activities to keep the whole family busy and its a different scene from always going to the beach. You also feel closer to nature and its a great place to discover the outdoors.

Hartebeespoortdam is an absolute tourist town. When visiting the aerial cableway you will have a spectacular view of the dam and surrounding mountains while enjoying a sundowner. It has recently been renovated with modern cable cars, so travelling up wont be a hair-raising experience. Harties is home to the country's only Citrus winery , giving you a fun taste experience.Visiting animal sancturies is an educational experience for the whole family. This town is worth visiting more than once and is the centre of many tourist attractions.

Good things
Quite and a break from the buzz of the city.
Not so good things
I found that there was not much to do (or is it me or is it bec we went there in winter?)
We went to the acqurium with the kids - there was not much to see there as well.

Going through to Harties for the weekend to relax when you live in Jhb is well worth it. We spent two days there.....and did not have enough time to see/do everything Harties has to offer. The accommodation was fantastic and the people real friendly. Definitely something we'll do again.

i find that the area of Hartbeespoort Dam is stunning. I spent a lovely weekend there at a fantastic resort which was comfortable, offered good accommodation and friendly service. I highly recommend the area for a lovely weekend away or even a long week away...you will feel refreshed, love the country air and the people are friendly and welcoming. Great place, great resorts and great people with lovely facilities and cheap places to buy good meat, food and any items you require. Amazing restaurants and sightseeing....dont miss out.

Living in KZN means that scenic routes and sites are the norm for us but the serene calmness of 'Harties' is breathtakingly beautiful and can give any overseas resorts a run for their money. Having driven hundreds of hot and dry kilometers, arriving at the Hartebeespoort Dam was a soothing balm to frayed tempers. The townspeople are friendly, the service providers efficient and the cuisine is mmmmha. Harties has found a spot in my heart and is on my list of 'places to visit again'

Whether you go for the day on your bike, get in your SUV or your 'old tjor' it is really so worth it to go to Hartbeespoort Dam. There is so much to do and see, the people are so friendly, the food is so excellent, the atmosphere is holiday like, relaxing, safe, you get that floating feeling - like you are in heaven and nothing, but nothing will go wrong.
Of course if you have more time and you for a weekend or longer, the accommodation is to die for - so much to choose from at very affordable prices. Don't delay, don't think, just do it!! You won't regret it.

Hard to believe that you can have such an idyllic, picturesque getaway only 45 minutes from Joburg.
I have stayed in log cabins up in the hills surrounding Harties Dam, where you have views that go on forever.
Well worth considering for a weekend getaway!

Living in KZN means that we are well used to scenic routes and sites but the Hartebeespoort Dam was beyond anything we've seen in our home Province. After a hot day of travelling and coming upon this picturesque village with the serene calmness of the Dam made us feel like we were in some expensive overseas resort. The townspeople are friendly, the service providers eager and efficient and the cuisine is mmmmha! Hartebeespoort is on my list of 'places to visit again'

I have visited a few place in Hartebeespoortdam, I love the tranquility and just the total feel of the place, it feels like a home away from home, I have even go so far as to say that I would love to retire their one day, its not far to drive and it just has so much to do, and even if you are not as adventerous, its a good place to just get away to relax. Absolutely would recommend Hartebeespoortdam to anyone for any holiday. Better than the sea

From live entertainment at Upper Deck, sipping on a cider, ordering an eisbein and tapping to the beat as old classics are revived.
For the ladies....the flea market is the place to be, tons of stalls and all about negotiations!!!
For romance: the boat cruise, sipping on sundowners watching the sun set. Then slipping off to your place of accommodation...Cocomo's or La Dolce Vita.
For the kids: the snake park is always a winner.
Camping: oh yes, affordable rates for campers and caravanning from Zanandi to Hartebeespoort resort.
This is the place to be, lots to see and where memories are made.
My first date was at Hartebeespoort Dam, I remember riding as a pinion on the back of the motorbike (petrified, first time ever on a motorbike).
The scenery of the mountains the and the view of the dam was breathtaking. We stopped off for drinks and pizza, went to the park and needless to say its been 5 years since then...guess where I am having my anniversary...

Last weekend it was freezingly cold in Johannesburg, so I decided to drive out to Hartbeespoort Dam for the day. What a pleasant experience! I spent the whole day at Chameleon Village, where I had lunch in the sun and even had a tarot card reading! There was no time to squeeze a visit to Jasmyn in which means I will have to make another trip soon!

So much to do. Adventure activities (Ama Zwing Zwing, Outside Adventures absieling and rafting etc), Nature activities (Bushbabies Monkey Sanctuary, and Ellies next door to it), cultural activities.(e.g. restaurants, music, sleep in an original Oxwagon, have a Romantic Picnic, etc).
And the best thing now is the Aerial Cableway. What a blast! Totally professional and world class. More intimate than Cape Town and better facilities.

Hartbeespoortdam is a little heaven on earth, If you never have been in Harties, you missed a lot. Hartbeespoortdam is rated in the top 2 for activities in South Africa. We didn`t see much of the dam as we came up to visit Sun City. However it is obviously a popular place for bikers as there were hundreds of motor bikes around on Sunday.

Hartbeespoort is a very nice place to visit - relaxing, cool and have so many places to visit like the elephant sanctuary etc. Educational for all family members. It has a nice view, the view of the mountains and the dam. I also enjoyed watching the dam waves as you cross over the bridge, it's beautiful. The place is very welcoming.

When my "Jaaahhhburg" friends told me we were going for a sunset cruise on Harties Dam, I wasn't exactly overcome with joy. I envisioned a small, dirty dam crowded with loud families. Truth is, I was taken aback by the awe-inspiring scenery of Harties and the tranquility of the area. The dam is more like an aquamarine coloured inland sea peppered with boats. Surrounded by mountains, waterfalls and a historical bridge, it really is worth visting. There are a number of companies offering sunset cruises and houseboat stays and you can also hike in the surrounding area. There aren't too many restaurants in the immediate area, so pack for a self-catering holiday.

A lot to do around the dam, and we had good fun. The elephant and monkey sanctuary is a bit expensive. It feels like they cater for the dollar and not local people.
