Harare The Queen of Hearts has been born of the efforts of Angela Bowen, Laura Flett and Lindsay Earle. The desire was to bring to Harare a place that feels like you are in the home of good friends who always have good food on the table - this is the spirit of the culture that we try to create.
Although we can offer private meeting rooms and open the cafe in the evenings for private events we are never closed to our regular customers.
The work done to the house to restore it was all done by Zimbabwean artisans. The candy-coloured kitchen is the the heart of the cafe with an eclectic collection of cookware, crockery and cutlery all chosen from vintage and antique sellers.
The basis of the food is to make everything from scratch using local or sourced ingredients that are fresh and seasonal, to support the person that actually grew or raised or made the ingredient as much as possible.
All the chocolate we use comes from Madagascar, it is single origin bean to bar premium chocolate and one of the only fine chocolates produced where the beans are grown. The high grade non-alkalised cocoa we use comes from a co-oprative in Ghana. All the vanilla we use is real bean sourced directly from the plantations where it is grown; we have vanilla pods from Uganda, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Tahiti.
We source some specialist products from Mymoune a family-run business in Lebanon. All their products are 100% natural, everything they use is ripened by the sun and hand picked. The saffron we use comes from Iran and Spain and the bulk of the spices come from Ceylon Plantation in Sri Lanka.
We believe in making everything from scratch with the most authentic ingredients possible. Our coffee, Truth, is the work of David Donde, his obsession is our daily offering. David’s opinion is that not all coffee is created equally and we agree, this exceptional blend is hand-roasted in Cape Town and now lovingly made here by barristers who trained with Truth. Our tea is hand-picked, dried in a drying room built by hand out of recycled cans, the herbs grown organically and maintain their life force and essence due to the delicate way they are handled.
We are open Monday to Saturday and look forward to meeting you!
