If you are looking for a luxurious experience surrounded by the peace and tranquility of the African bush and far from the distractions of the modern world where the only disturbance is the call of the magnificent fish eagle piercing the morning skies and the lazy flow of the river far below, then Huntshoek Game Lodge is the place for you. We have two different establishments which cater for all budgets and needs.

Huntsdrift is an intimate self-catering lodge ideal for small groups. There are five rooms with en-suite bathrooms and a communal open-plan lounge, dining room, bar and kitchen area that open out onto a central gathering point where guests can draw together around a crackling fire.

Huntshoek is a luxury lodge consisting of five chalets each with a private deck and magnificent views of the Fish River. The chalets have en-suite bathrooms as well as open-air showers for the adventurous. Huntshoek offers dinner, bed and breakfast with the rate per day inclusive of all beverages. Light lunches can be arranged upon request.

Bring your mountain bike or walking shoes and explore this very diverse and rugged countryside which is alive with warthog, buck, zebra and wildebeest to name a few. With an abundance of bird life, it is the avid birdwatcher's delight so make sure you bring your bird guide and binoculars. Discover a surprise around every corner, from fragile flora to the slow moving tortoise; you will not be disappointed. The river offers great fresh water angling experiences and a challenge to any addicted angler or newcomer. At nightfall, sit on the deck and gaze up at an unforgettable star-studded sky or simply soak up the sounds of the bush and the beauty of a moonlit night while sipping one of our superb South African wines.

Crown River Safari and Wildlife Reserve is home to the Crown Eagle, Fish Eagles and Kingfishers, just some of the kaleidoscope of bird species nesting in habitation along the river banks.

Kudu majestically roam the bushveld while zebra graze lazily on the open plains. Nyala and bushbuck appear from the lengthening shadows and Largemouth Bass glide below in rock crevices as the crimson sunset gives way to a shimmering moon reflected on the water. Several other species brought back from the brink of extinction also enjoy the ecological harmony.

The Reserve borders the Thomas Baines Nature Reserve, situated in the main water catchment area of Grahamstown at the confluence of two rivers. Malaria-free, the area is known as Frontier Country, embracing a variety of cultures from existing tribes to others establishing themselves as early as 1812.

Perfectly balanced, Crown River is a nature lover’s paradise with dense ravine thickets, scattered thorn trees, and open areas making this an idyllic outdoor experience. The Crown River philosophy is driven by making quality and lasting friendships, bringing guests closer to nature, and ensuring that they experience enduring memories.

    Grahamstown South Africa

    Grahamstown Safari Accommodation

With a large university, some of South Africa’s top schools and a plethora of museums and other cultural attractions, Grahamstown is a rather erudite destination. It’s also the venue of the National Festival of the Arts, which is the second largest arts festival in the world, coming in just behind Edinburgh.

Of Grahamstown’s numerous lovely old buildings, many of which are national monuments, the one that – literally – stands out is the magnificent Cathedral of St Michael and St George, which forms a focal point at the top of High Street. The more academic of the many museums in Grahamstown include the Observatory Museum, which has the only genuine Victorian Camera Obscura in the southern hemisphere, the National English Literary Museum, the Library of African Music and – rather unusually considering its inland position – the SA Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity, where you can see exhibits relating to the coelacanth – the fossil fish that was thought to be extinct but still lives off the South African coast.

Grahamstown’s position on the 19th century frontier between the British colonialists and the Xhosa tribes, has contributed to its interesting history. And the culture of rebellion that was forged in the Frontier Wars was brought to bear during the 20th century to the extent that Grahamstown was one of the major centres of resistance to the apartheid regime. Local historians offer insightful tours of the area, highlighting seminal moments in South Africa’s history.

Grahamstown has a decent golf course and it is very close to one of the newest golf resorts in South Africa – the Gary Player-designed Bushman Sands in the interesting and unusual town of Alicedale. There is good climbing near the town, a skydiving club and – less than an hour’s drive away – good surfing at Port Alfred. There are numerous excellent game viewing destinations within an hour’s drive of Grahamstown.
