There is a variety of excellent accommodation to suit every pocket and a holiday to the Elephant Coast will be enjoyed by everyone from adventure lovers to those who just want to escape to the bush and commune with nature.

Dense evergreen forests of towering fig trees stand in a lush undergrowth of ferns and wild orchids hanging from the trees. Palm savannahs with thousands of wild date and lala palms dot the white sand of the undulating landscape. Swamp forests with large raffias and tangled masses of greenery that are home to myriads of exquisite birds and behind them mountainous sand dunes that appear to shift with the sighing of gentle winds.

Ndumu River Lodge is located in a diverse ecosystem that traverses from the Lebombo Mountains neighboring Swaziland to the Laquit Sand Forests of the Mozambique boundary. Ndumu River Lodge offers air conditioned en-suite rooms and self catering units. We offer breakfast, lunch and dinner in our restaurant. Forming part of the North western route of the elephant coast, Ndumu River Lodge is only 500 km from Johanesburg and 450 km from Durban. Amangwane is a community and business partnership right next to the Kosi Bay mouth gate. This rustic haven is set in the dunes surrounding the Lakes of Kosi bay in the heart of the welcoming Thongaland community. It is a mere 15 minute drive/30 minute walk to Kosi Bay mouth. Kosi bay is situated in the northern part of the iSimangaliso wetland park which is the first Natural World Heritage Site in South Africa. Kosi Bay reflects an Africa that is still untouched by western influences and displays the continuing culture and attitudes towards the environment of the Thonga people. We are also approximately 5km from the Mozambique border post of Ponta D’Oura making us the perfect stop over before an excursion or daytrip into Mozambique.

Kosi Bay consists of four lakes that feed into the Indian Ocean. These lakes range from freshwater to saline and traditional fishing methods are still employed here today by the Thonga people. Through the use of fishing kraals that are constructed out of only the local plants and grasses, the Thonga people fish the lakes in an ecologically sound way that cannot result in overfishing – it is in this way that the Thonga take care of the environment that has been their home for centuries.

The name Amangwane originates from business partner Elmon Mkhonto’s family name. The word Amangwane place of the octopus has strong traditional links with the Mkhonto family of Kosi Bay. Amangwane lodge was chosen as a fitting name for our community owned lodge firstly due to its link to Elmon and his family, but also due to the fact that like the arms of the Octopus our lodge reaches out to embrace the community that surrounds us.

We are fully accessible by ordinary motorcar 4x4 vehicles are not necessary to reach our Kosi Bay accommodation. Our reed chalets are also well spaced to offer you the maximum privacy while you stay with us.

Our accommodation comprises of 10 traditionally constructed en-suite reed chalets with a separate communal dining and boma area, which of course has a fire pit – no night in South Africa, would be complete without an evening under the stars swapping stories of your travels around a campfire. As well as dinner, bed and breakfast accommodation we offer package adventures with lots of activities, or self-catering.
