Lanseria Airport is a privately owned international airport conveniently situated in the north west of Johannesburg and close to Sandton.Currently it is used mostly for regional, corporate and diplomatic aircraft but can manage sizable aircraft such as the Boeing 757-300 and Airbus A319. Lanseria handles more take-offs and landings per year than any other airport in Africa although the amount of passengers is not nearly as high as OR Tambo International Airport.When Nelson Mandela was released from prison in May 1990, he was flown to Johannesburg.
