From field to fork! Go shopping at an exciting new organic market this January. The Stellenbosch Fresh Goods Market recently opened a new indoor market at Willowbridge Lifestyle Centre in Durbanville - slower, more organic and more authentic. Their mission is to support local food from field to fork.
There are numerous good reasons to shop at urban food markets that it’s hard to know where to start. Starting with sublime taste, fruit and vegetables fresh from the farm are real and tasty. The food at markets is also more nourishing and cultivated in a way that is much friendlier to the environment.
Learn cooking tips, recipes, and meal ideas. Few shops will give you tips on how to cook the ingredients you buy, but farmers and vendors at the market are often passionate cooks with plenty of free advice about how to cook the foods they are selling. They'll give you ideas for what to have for supper and hand out recipes.
Connect with your community. Wouldn't you rather stroll amidst outdoor stalls of fresh produce on a sunny day than roll your cart around a grocery store with artificial lights and piped in music? Coming to the market makes shopping a pleasure rather than a chore. The Fresh Goods Market is a community gathering place - a place to meet up with your friends, bring your children, or just get a taste of small-town life.
Need to know? The Willowbridge Slow Market is open every Saturday from 9am to 2pm at Willowbridge Lifestyle centre in Durbanville. Be sure to get there early.
