Description
Darling is a small town in a farming area on the west coast region of the Western Cape, about 75 km from Cape Town. Darling is the heartbeat of the West Coast region. The little village lies tucked away between hills of vineyards and golden wheat fields.
Darling is famous for its wildflowers and since 1917 the annual Darling Wildflower Show is held by the Darling Wildflower Society. For those interested in farming history, the Darling Museum holds a collection of large agricultural machines.
Darling has become the home of well-known South African satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys's theatre, Evita se Perron, a cabaret venue and restaurant in Darling, named after his alter-ego, Evita Bezuidenhout.
The adjacent arts and crafts market was taken over in 2006 by the Darling Trust, a charitable organisation which addresses the problems of impoverished communities in the area through the establishment of grassroots projects.
Darling is one of those towns that take you back to times gone past, with lovingly restored Victorian homes and ancient trees adding to it's charm. Take in an evening show, spend a day at the beach in nearby Yzerfontein and explore the sights and sounds of this delightful town.
