The Daan Viljoen Game Reserve is as well known as Windhoek itself. The Reserve has recently opened again, after it was closed for almost 4 years, with the newly developed Sun Karros Daan Viljoen Lodge. Due to its close proximity to Windhoek (25km) it is a big attraction, not only for the locals but also the tourist market. There are no large predators in Daan Viljoen nature reserve but oryx, blue wildebeest, red hartebeest, klipspringer, steenbok, zebra, impala, giraffe and kudu roam freely. With some 200 species of Namibian birdlife recorded here, Daan Viljoen Nature Reserve is a popular birding destination. Several of Namibia's specials such as the rockrunner, white-tailed shrike, Monteiro's hornbill, Bradfield’s Swift, Rüppell's parrot and Carp's tit can be observed. There are 2 hiking trails and a self-drive game viewing route for guests to enjoy. This is a must see venue for when you are in Windhoek next, the newly built Lodge is beautiful and does not disturb nature at all.
