Mount Ceder Lodge in the Cederberg Mountains is a perfect destination for a weekend away, offering visitors a host of exciting accommodation and activity options. Located in a valley, surrounded by rugged and arrestingly dramatic mountains, Mount Ceder is situated on the main route through the Cederberg range.

The lodge features 11 fully equipped self-catering cottages sleeping two to six people, as well as three lovely campsites. All cottages are fully equipped with linen, towels, cutlery, crockery a fridge, stove, and microwave. There is also a fireplace inside and a braai area outside each cottage. Firewood available for purchase and a cleaning service is available on request.

The Old Mill House Restaurant provides hearty dinners, breakfasts and light lunches if you don't feel like cooking, and the little on-site store supplies essentials as well as local olive and fruit products. Mount Ceder has so much to offer such as hiking, river swimming, canoeing, horse riding, mountain biking, and exploring the local rock art.

The Cederberg region is only two and a half hours from Cape Town and yet the landscape is completely different from that of the Mother City; it is wilder and warmer, with a raw dramatic beauty. The dominating characteristic of the area is sharply defined sandstone rock formations, often reddish in colour. This group of rocks contains bands of shale and in recent years, a few important fossils have been discovered in these argillaceous layers. Farmers also cultivate the world-famous healthy rooibos tea, found only in the Cederberg of South Africa, and a visit to a rooibos farm is a delightful addition to a day trip from Mount Ceder.

Got no tent. Can't camp? No longer the case, intrepid budget traveller. With the arrival of Wolfkop Camping Villages, the hassle and logistics of a camping weekend is now a thing of the past. In fact, if the blurb "you only bring food and clothes" is anything to go by, any preconceived idea you have about camping - leaking tents, missing poles and pegs, hard ground and sand fleas, is in for a serious shake up.

To set the scene, what we offer is a 100-hectare citrus-buchu-rooibos farm located about 20 km from Citrusdal, with the campsite located right on the banks of the Olifants River, so we're not talking dodge municipal setting. We're talking wide open spaces, green grass, gorgeous sunsets, languid days filled with swimming, braaing and getting to know your neighbours.

Each camping village, there can be a maximum of six spread along a 200 m stretch, comprises a 7.5 or 10 square Bedouin free form marquee with an excellent outlook over the water, and one to three (depending on group size) canvas tents pitched underneath and equipped with three-quarter high density foam mattresses, cotton percale bedding, blankets, towels. Then, there's a fully equipped kitchen area with a braai grid and utensils, chairs, tables, electric light and cooler boxes.

Furthermore, every village has its own power point and hammocks, lest you forget that camping is hard work. Ablutions hot showers and flush toilets are communal, as is the fridge for the frosties, freezer and microwave. Talk about roughing it in style.

Canoes and kayaks are available for hire - but bring your own if you have.
