Warm hearted swimmers set for icy Camps Bay race to benefit Cerebral Palsy women
A group of top Cape Town swimmers is tackling a challenging cold water relay race on Women’s Day weekend to raise funds to treat 100 women with Cerebral Palsy to a night out at the theatre. The swim, on Sunday August 10, the day after Women’s Day, takes place from the beach at Camps Bay where around 40 long distance swimmers will race a distance of 2000 metres in relay.

Each team is required to raise at least R1000 which will be used to take a group of women linked to the Western Cape Cerebral Palsy Association (WCCPA) to a stage presentation of “BeautyFull” at the Artscape theatre. The dance production which honours the female spirit has been specially directed by Alfred Hinkel for Women’s Day and for women with Cerebral Palsy. The women will also be treated to a meal and a small gift bag.

Race organizer and renowned long distance swimmer, Ram Barkai, said each relay team member will be required to swim 250m to a buoy off Camps Bay beach and back. A calculation of the time swum and the age of the teams’ swimmers will determine the winners who will receive a prize of R2000. Barkai urged swimmers to join the race to support the spirit of Women’s Day. “No matter your age or gender, come and sign up for this truly meaningful cause.”
Hillary Lane, CEO of the Western Cape Cerebral Palsy Association said: “All the ladies are very excited and are looking forward to the show because they aren’t able to get out much. This is an extra special initiative.” Swim sponsors include Cadiz Financial Strategy Group and Vida e caffe.

Need to know? Registration is at 9am on the beach and the swim starts at 10am. Donations can be made to the WCCPA through Debbie Clark 021 685 4150. For race information contact Ram Barkai on 021 657 8672 or email: Ram.Barkai@cadiz.co.za
