Melon Rouge Restaurant

Eccentric, rustic, bohemian and countrified, Melon Rouge is a little known restaurant serving scrumptious food, but it’s also an art gallery, wine cellar and cigar bar, antique store, a crafty home store, and second hand bookshop. Sit outdoors and take in the mountainous views on the enormous stoep or under the Wild Olive tree grove where the roosters roam. If you plonk yourself down on a vintage chair indoors the delicious wafting aromas will give you an insane appetite!

Van Gaalen Cheese Farm

Visit the Van Gaalen Kaasmakerij and witness the age old Dutch method of making Boerenkaas. Thirty different cheeses are produced here - gouda in different stages of maturity, cumin or Leidse kaas, stinging nettle cheese, garlic & onion cheese, pepper cheese, feta, herb feta, cheese spread, nut cheese, and Italian herb cheese are just a few.

The cheese is matured in large walk in fridges adjoining the Kaasmakerij. Most cheeses are sold at the farm shop, as well as picnic baskets to enjoy on the banks of the Skeerpoort river or dam. Shadowed by the magnificent Magalies Mountains, the outdoor restaurant is a great spot to have breakfast or a cheese lunch whilst watching the abundant bird life visiting the dam.

Need to know? Closed on Tuesdays.
