On your next visit to Barkly East in the Eastern Cape, why not stop at the old house of Charlie Wakeford, Charlie’s Place Guest House, now owned by Frikkie and Irmgard Tauber. The 1950s house, with its modern interior and farm-style finishings, offers four fully furnished en-suite rooms each named after family farms, namely Fairfield, Celidon, Knighton and Locksley. Two large family rooms and two houses are now available too.

After a good night's rest and farm breakfast, head out and enjoy the many attractions the scenic landscape has to offer. The well-known Tiffendell Ski-Resort, hunting, fly-fishing, horse riding, hiking, 4x4 routes and Bushman paintings are just some of many adventures on offer.

Set in the picturesque Witteberg mountain range, the southwestern spur of the Drakensberg, 1100 ha of pristine mountain terrain and crystal clear streams are home to Reedsdell Country Guest Farm. Holistic farming practices ensure the sustainability of the fragile ecosystems, while Eco-tourism allows this scenic environment to be shared responsibly with one and all.

The Guest farm nestles below the sheer cliffs of the majestic peaks of the Drakensberg among montane grasslands where visitors can hear the gurgle of the Joggem & Edgehill streams in which shy wild trout abide. Spotting the Mountain Reedbuck and Vaal Rhebok is a challenge as their shining coats blend in with the fawn grasslands. Home to the Lammergeier (Bearded Vulture) and the Black Eagle that fly wistfully on the thermals that rise above the dominating Drakensberg peaks. The surrounding valleys and ridges offer spectacular walks through an awe-inspiring landscape with many wildflowers and a variety of birdlife.

Here the Drakensberg changes mood with weather and season, often covered in snow in winter or cascading waterfalls down vertical cliffs inviting a refreshing swim in summer.

Your hosts, Chris & Kath, have been farming for the last 20 years, with 15 years in the hospitality industry. The Isted family has been farming in the district for 6 generations.

The Loft is a comfortable and charming renovated Victorian building near the ski slopes of Tiffindell. It is set snugly in the town of Barkly East in the alpine region of the Witteberg Mountains, Southern Drakensburg. This lovely house is the perfect place to stay when exploring this magnificent area.

The house has one delightful double bedroom with queen-bed; one comfortable twin bedroom, and the spacious Loft Suite upstairs. A communal kitchen is available for guests. The latter has beautiful views over the rooftops of Barkly East to the snow-capped mountains beyond. This is one of the few places in South Africa that experiences annual snowfalls. All the bedrooms are heated, and the house is north-facing, so it remains cosy in the chilly, snowy winters.

Choose to go on day drives to explore the many caves of San Rock Art in the vicinity, or go horse-back riding in the mountains. Perhaps a day on the ski slopes at Tiffindell takes your fancy, or a day lazing on the river with a picnic basket filled with scrumptious goodies. The birdlife is prolific, and the trout still take the bait. The alpine flowers are just beautiful, and you might spot a shooting star in the breath-taking night-sky. Meals available on request.
