Sanctuary Saadani River Lodge

Sleeps 64 in 18 rooms

Sanctuary Saadani River Lodge is set on the glorious banks of the Wami River overlooking Saadani...
Sanctuary Saadani River Lodge is set on the glorious banks of the Wami River overlooking Saadani National Park. This new luxury retreat promises to deliver unsurpassed refinement with a touch of creative flair.

There are 18 suites and one private villa which have been cleverly hidden amongst the indigenous flora of the riverine forest and set into the canopy to allow spectacular views over the gently meandering river. The spacious Suites are arranged in a horse-shoe formation to provide refined comfort and scheduled privacy. All suites focus on the meandering ebbs and flows of the river and provide a fluid palette of colours, noises and textures.

The term absolute luxury provides the classification for amenities provided, but cannot illustrate the subtly of tones and sense of warmth the rooms generate by their embrace with nature. Air-conditioning is provided but not obligatory as fans and netted sliding windows provide a superior cooling system to those in the know. Televisions have been hidden so as to not to distract from the scenery an tea and coffee is provided in each room along with a minibar, safe, Wi-Fi connection and room service.

This retreat has been carefully positioned in an area of strategic conservation importance, designed to protect the border of the national park as well as establish a greater protected surface area for many interesting and endemic species. The lodge offers a plethora of activities including tag and release sport fishing, sails on a traditional dhow to sand banks for lazy days spent enjoying the azure waters or trips into the National park.

This innovative lodge sprung from the need to protect the southern banks of the Wami River. Once home to a multitude of migratory and endemic wildlife species, the area succumbed quickly to the ravishes of poaching, hunting and the bush meat trade. Our shared ambition is to conserve the indigenous flora and encourage the wildlife to flourish once more. We will follow up on this by introducing a programme of replanting indigenous plant species in areas affected by charcoal production and especially in areas close to the river where mangrove has been removed.

CasaKasa Bagamoyo is a new private beach house located just on the outskirts of Mlingotini. Privacy on the four-acre plot is properly secured and the garden is fully developed, with peacocks strolling freely around. A paved garden entertainment area features barbecue facilities and a separate kitchen, the perfect location for parties or for a couple appreciating the bonfire. We can also arrange a local band or dance troop to entertain.

The pool area features a lounge section, a sunbathing area with a shower, as well as an area for dining. Separate toilet facilities cater for both the pool area as well as the garden entertainment area. A paved walkway leads straight to the beach, while a private concrete slipway can be used for launching boats.

The main house is designed as a traditional Zanzibar mansion. Details including furniture, windows and the carved doors are built based on architecture from long ago. On the ground floor are a spacious reception area and three bedrooms. One of these is self-contained; the other two are in a separate corridor and share a bathroom. One bedroom has a king-size bed and one double bed and the other two bedrooms have one king-size bed in each. All bedrooms and the reception are fully air-conditioned.

Upstairs features the living areas and kitchen, with a breathtaking view of the lagoon and the Indian Ocean. On clear days we can also see across to Zanzibar. The living area is open to take full advantage of the view and the cooling breeze. A traditional wooden fishing boat separates the dining area and the lounge. The dinner table is normally set for eight guests, however can be extended for up to 20. The lounge area also has a smaller dining table, ideal for four people.

A bar separates the kitchen from the living area. The kitchen is equipped with gas cooker and barbecue, and big windows with shutters only enhance the feeling of openness. There is also a separate guest wing comprising three bedrooms and one bathroom.

A powerful generator secures lighting and air-conditioning independent of the local network. Food can be provided according to the request of each client. The layout of the property secures complete privacy, and a separate Swahili-style servant wing houses staff for cleaning, laundry and gardening. Security staff reside in the village.

CasaKasa Bagamoyo is the perfect base for experiencing East Africa for honeymooners, families and smaller groups looking for privacy and luxury. From our local airstrip, you can be in Zanzibar in only 40 minutes, or we can arrange for you to sail across from the beach in front of the house by a traditional dhow. We can also assist in arranging safaris from the local airstrip or by car.

Bomani Beach Bungalows is a place for real African experiences, offering Tanzanian and Norwegian hospitality, just 15 km south of Bagamoyo and 50 km north of Dar Es Salaam.

Accommodation is offered Bungalows and the Main House, all rooms have air-conditioning, a private bathroom, and a small terrace overlooking the sea, the garden or the lagoon. On clear days you may even see a glimpse of Zanzibar. Single, double, triple or quadruple rooms are available.

Bomani offers a restaurant and two bars; one bar in the restaurant and one bar on the beach. The restaurant offers an a-la-carte menu with international dishes and specialty sea food, fresh from the beach.

The beach life at Bomani is a special experience; we have decided to share the beach with the fishermen in the village, not to destroy their traditional way of living. This means that you are able to follow their daily work from the beach bed or -chair. The women and the children will also pass by, greeting you if you signalize that you see them. No begging or selling is established here, they only want to show that they appreciate your visit in Mlingotini Village. If you prefer more privacy, the beach bar or even the place in front of you room is also a nice area to enjoy the sun or the cool shade.

The garden at Bomani Beach Bungalows is a combination of what the nature has given us and what we have planted. The coconut trees are the perfect frame for the view, while the fruits are tempting part of it during the seasons. The many flowers and trees are attracting a wide range of butterflies and birds. Calm down, use all your senses and enjoy it. If you are longing for some activities, don’t hesitate to play beach volleyball or other games we have put up.

Lazy Lagoon lies in the Zanzibar Channel, offshore from mainland Bagamoyo, the capital of German East Africa and the "Gateway to the Dark Continent". An idyllic Robinson Crusoe Island, the perfect way to start or end a safari. The hotel is built at the tip of the 9 km-long private island of sand, bush and mangrove, still inhabited by wildlife. With airy rooms and wide shaded verandahs furnished with hammocks and deck chairs, the rooms offer beautiful views of the beach.

The 12 self-contained beach bandas feature twin or double beds, with en-suite showers, and the upper loft can be used as a lounge area or a bedroom for children. Room service and complimentary laundry service is available and tea and coffee is provided, as well as towels. A generator is used for electricity until 11 pm.

The swimming pool, bar, restaurant and sundowner lounge are located on the tip of the island, and from a hammock it is the ideal position for watching the sun rise over Zanzibar and set across the sea over the palm trees on the mainland. If sun worshipping, swimming and snorkelling isn’t enough, guests can try kayaking to explore the lagoon and mangrove forest, a sunset dhow safari to nearby sand islands and the coral reef, or a visit to the nearby historical town of Bagamoyo. Diving can also be arranged with the nearby diving centre and rates are available on request. Mobile phone reception is available on the island for some networks for guests who want to keep in contact with the outside world.

Lazy Lagoon can be reached by road from Dar Es Salaam, a trip of just under an hour, traffic permitting, and this is followed by a short motor boat trip across the 2 km stretch of sea to reach the island. Traditional boarding methods and an element of shallow paddling may be required to get to the boat. Secure parking is available at the Mbegani Fisheries boat building yard and boat transfers from the mainland are included.

Watch the local fishing fleet move slowly out to sea while waking up to another day of snorkelling over coral reefs, sailing on the Indian Ocean breezes, visiting historical sites, or just soaking up the sun. Wind down to the sight of the returning fleet bringing in the catch for dinner. Just another blissful day at Lazy Lagoon.
