Quatermain's Camp, situated on the beautiful Amakhala Game Reserve, embodies the original spirit of safari. Our intimate camp offers you the opportunity to experience "Africa under canvas" with crisp white 1900's style safari tents fitted out with militiary campaign style furnishings; the choice of pioneers, hunters and explorers of that time. Relax in the centralised boma area where local delicacies are prepared in front of you on an open fire and dinner is served under a blanket of stars. Every effort has been made to stay true to the expedition style, with concessions only being allowed for rustic bathrooms with modern conveniences. Guests at our expedition camp can enjoy the excitement of  "Big 5" safari's with the option for "Big 5" walks, bush walks and birding safari's as well. Your hosts, Julie and Riaan Brand are both experienced rangers and will do their upmost to ensure that you have a safari experience you will never forget. You will have the chance of seeing  elephant, white and black rhino, cheetah, buffalo, lion as well as a variety of other game including hyena, zebra, giraffe, many species of antelope and much more. As well as the larger, more obvious creatures your hosts will delight in showing you the smaller but no less important members of this ecosystem as well as the birds and plants.
Our per person, per night rate includes accommodation, 2 game activities per day, beverages on game activites and all meals.

Bukela Game Lodge

Sleeps 8 in 4 rooms

Resting in the rolling Eastern Cape hills 80 kilometres outside Port Elizabeth, Bukela Lodge offers a gentle, tranquil escape from the...
Resting in the rolling Eastern Cape hills 80 kilometres outside Port Elizabeth, Bukela Lodge offers a gentle, tranquil escape from the world. The abundant Amakhala wildlife includes lion, cheetah, black and white rhino, elephant, giraffe, zebra and buffalo, ranging over a breath-taking oxbow river plain in the heart of the 7 500 hectare, malaria-free conservancy. Our intimate four-suite lodge offers an exclusive game viewing experience which, combined with our luxurious, secluded accommodation, and variety of dining options, creates a remarkable, private retreat in which to regenerate body and mind.

Amenities: Bukela Lodge offers 5-star luxury of an International standard. The main lodge comprises of a reception, dining and sitting area with a central fireplace which is always the centre of attraction in winter. Also available are a media and library area with Internet, television, DVD player, games and books and a large wooden pool deck overlooking a small dam frequented by buffalo. A separate area known as a “boma” adjoins the main lodge where bush braais and special festivities are offered for our guest’s enjoyment.

Clothing - Dress code and clothing is informal. It is advisable to wear loose fitting and light garments in summer, layering clothing in winter. Sensible shoes are important in the rough terrain. A warm wind breaker jacket or jersey for game drives even in summer is a necessity. Neutral colored garments are advisable in the bush. Sun hats, sunglasses and swimming costume are required in summer. Fleeced sweatshirts, golf shirts, robes and caps are available for purchase from the lodge should guests require any of these items.

Equipment - A good pair of binoculars is a recommendation especially for bird watching. Good photographs can be taken on game drives when the vehicle is stationary, but rarely when in transit as terrain is rough. Guests should bear this in mind when purchasing suitable camera equipment. The recommended film is 100-200 A.S.A. and a zoom lens is not always a necessity but recommended.

Food - Please inform management at Bukela of any specific dietary preferences you may have before arrival. Coffee, tea, fresh juice and pastries are served before each game drive in addition to any snacks provided on the drive itself. Beverages and snacks over and above that mentioned can be requested throughout a guests stay, accounts for which may be settled on departure.
Housekeeping - Suites are cleaned unobtrusively thrice daily while guests enjoy a game drive or meal. At no other time will guests be disturbed unless they request assistance. Our staff is always available to assist guests wherever necessary. Incoming calls may be received on the lodge cellular phone.

Water -The water is derived from a borehole and not for human consumption. Complementary bottled water is provided. Wines - Bukela Lodge offers a versatile and well-appointed selection of South African and International wines, sparkling wines and French champagne to suit your palate. Weather - The region is temperate with summer conditions (October – March) reaching temperatures of 36C. Winter (April-September) brings many sunny days but evenings can be chilly. Rain falls mainly in the summer months and umbrellas are available in the main lodge for your use when traversing to your suite in these conditions. The African climate can change dramatically whatever the season. Rangers will check weather reports before embarking on a game drive, but guests should please ensure that they are suitably attired in “layered” clothing for hot or cold conditions.

Suites: The four suites, Uthando Suite, Ingwe Suite, Inyathi Suite and Umkhombe, are each individually styled in African simplicity while never compromising on luxury. Each suite sleeps two guests and is a world of its own, separated from the main lodge by wooden walkways and indigenous bush. Each suite is well appointed for guests’ optimal comfort with every amenity, including large, en-suite bathrooms each with a spa bath overlooking the African bush, an indoor and outdoor shower for the more adventurous, and a central fireplace for romantic evenings, air-conditioning, under floor heating, private wooden deck, bar fridge and hot drink amenities. Beds are King size or two singles depending on guest requirements. All our suites are luxurious but the “honeymoon suite” with a huge four poster mahogany bed is a particularly intimate space and can be reserved for your special occasion.

Reed Valley has been in the Weeks family for over one hundred years. It was purchased in 1898 by Jabez Weeks, son of an 1820 Settler. The previous owners were of Dutch descent. The main house is estimated to have been built in 1806. Through time, many farming enterprises such as cows, sheep, ostriches, crocodiles, pineapples and dairy have had their successes and failures. Rod and Tracey Weeks are now the fifth generation on Reed Valley which is part of the Amakhala Game Reserve. Our forefathers spent their time hunting leopard, lions and elephant to enable them to farm in peace and now we have re-introduced them in a unique joint conservation project with five neighbouring family farms. Accommodation Reed Valley Inn is nestled in a farmyard and is comprised of four historic en-suite country rooms, which once provided rest and safety for the travellers on the mail wagon. Each room has a separate entrance on to a private patio. Children of all ages are welcome. A sumptuous dinner featuring local specialties will be served with true Eastern Cape hospitality. In the morning, enjoy a hearty breakfast before you set off to discover the untold beauty of our land. Your stay will be made special by personalised attention and arrangements that are tailor-made to suit your requirements from catering to excursions and activities. We offer rooms that are serviced daily, a swimming pool, and classic pub.

Situated in Frontier Country, Carnarvon Dale is an 1857 family farm on the banks of the Bushman’s River. This historic Settler farmhouse once provided lodgings for travelers, whose journeys had been halted by the flooded river, until it was safe for them to cross. In this same tradition of hospitality, we welcome you into our home and invite you to share our heritage.

Once too, travelers recorded that our open plains were home to the mighty elephant and fearsome lion and that the valley bushveld teemed with game of many species. As you return to nature, so nature will return to you all that is good. We invite you to share in our conservation experience.

Carnarvon Dale consists of the Settler farmhouse, the Bottom House, and an elegantly restored early Edwardian cottage, the Top House. On offer is a choice of en-suite serviced bedrooms with private lounges meeting three star grading requirements. A family suite is available on request.

Delicious farm-style meals are served in the main dining room. Morning and late afternoon guided game drives in an open Land Rover are arranged to suit your personal needs. For a change of pace enjoy our bird watching and game spotting walks along the lazy Bushman’s River.

In the evenings there are new friends to be made over cool sundowners and stories of bygone days to entertain you around a “braaivleis” fire under South African stars.

Your hosts at Carnarvon Dale, Roger and Maryan Hart, will make your stay a memorable and enjoyable one. Let them introduce you to the rich heritage of this unique landscape and its history while you enjoy the warm hospitality that defines the Eastern Cape

Listen to the heartbeat and hear the rhythms of Africa at The Safari Lodge in the breathtaking Eastern Cape wilderness. The Safari Lodge is tucked away in a valley of indigenous bush at the northern boundary of the 6000 hectare Amakhala Game Reserve. Nestled between Shamwari Game Reserve and Addo Elephant National Park, its location is ideal for the best wildlife viewing South Africa has to offer. The Safari Lodge offers a three day package which, along with activities on Amakhala, includes a game drive into Addo and a day trip to Shamwari.

The landscape and elements of African tribal design influenced owners and artists, Mike and Justine Weeks, in their endeavour to achieve a holistic safari experience. The Safari Lodge sleeps 12 people. In addition to the four original safari huts there are two new luxury suites complete with private plunge pools and separate lounge areas. Canvas drop blinds open up the safari huts and the central lounge to views of a small waterhole where monkeys come to play and antelope and zebra to quench their thirst.

You can soak away the heat in a luxurious double bath with the sights and sounds of nature or splash off the dust in a double outdoor shower. Large beds draped with mosquito nets, sparkling wine on ice alongside a double bath filled with aromatherapy scented bubbles make this a favourite for honeymooners and the romantic at heart.

In the evening the haunting sound of the kudu horn will summon you to the fireside, to share tales of your day’s adventure and to enjoy award winning South African wines and local cuisine under a magnificent canopy of stars. Our resident chef will treat you with gastronomic delights presented with African flair to end off the perfect day.

Woodbury Tented Camp is one of the hidden jewels of the Eastern Cape. Tucked into an embracing hillside thicket and overlooking the ancient floodplain of the Bushman’s River, the Camp offers rustic and secluded luxury, and an authentic African wildlife safari experience.

Seven large, comfortable, en-suite tents on raised bases, and with private patios provide the seclusion, tranquility and an intimacy with the bush that you would expect on a visit to Amakhala Game Reserve. Each tent has twin or double beds - at your request.

Camp life is centred around the stone, thatch and canvas main dining and lounge area, with its expansive deck overlooking the Woodbury plain and waterhole. A wide variety of game species such as zebra, giraffe, buffalo, eland, rhino and elephant fill the passing parade while fish eagles soar overhead, their hauntingly evocative cry echoing across the valley.
