Description

Colesberg is situated in the beautiful, haunting and majestic Karoo. This sheep-farming area stretches over half-a-million hectares and produces many of South Africa's top merinos. Many stud farms can also be found here and racehorse breeding is a popular activity.

The town is named after 'Coleskop', one of the many koppies (hills) in the area. What makes 'Coleskop', called 'Towerberg' or 'magic mountain' by early travellers, so special is the curious illusion it creates as you travel closer to it - it never seems to near.

Unfortunately didn't have much time to experience the town but had a great dinner at JC's Restaurant.

Unfortunately the town fathers of Colesberg do not seem to care much about the two Boer War cemeteries they have, although these are worth visiting. The old town cemetery not far away is a disgrace and in urgent need of spruce up. These could make interesting points for short-stop visitors but it needs work.

Colesberg is conveniently placed between Johannesburg and Cape Town. It makes a pleasant break from what is a very long and tedious journey to the Cape.

We were not impressed by Colesburg, the town was rather run down and had a nasty sewerage smell around. Would stay over somewhere else next time.

Colesberg seems to exist on B&B's and overnight accommodation. Pubs and restaurants on a par but the rest of the town seems to be destitute. The autobank used in the middle of town was in a state and just added to a feeling of a town battling to survive. Sorry but this is a fleeting first impression. We did see some future development both in process and about to be started in 2013. Hopefully these with breathe some much needed life into to town. Good Luck, hope to see you again in the not too distant future.

A quaint little town that is still stuck in the 20th century. I enjoyed looking at the old buildings and was amased at the cleanliness of the town. Would be nice if there could be a Kentucky to complement the Wimpy.

A small town with very little in the way of commerce and industry. We arrived on a Sunday so there was only 1 eatery open at the old mill. Food was good and wholesome boerekos and the beer was cold.

We travel regularly from Cape Town to Johannesburg and stop at van Zyl's Vlei on the way up and down. We have always had an awesome experience here starting from the welcome you get as you arrive to the delightful home cooked meal for dinner. Rooms are always immaculate and comfortable. It may not be on the highway or in the town but this affordable accommodation is highly recommended. Van Zyl's Vlei is the ideal place for anyone looking for a good night's rest before hitting the highway to continue their journey.

Defnitely a must to stop between Johannesburg and Cape Town! To our family this was like an oasis. Time to relax, refresh and rest. Made our journey very comfortable. Environment clean, rooms very comfortable, staff very professional, friendly and helpful. Easy to find. Will defnitely stay over should we travel to Johannesburg and from.

I think for most people, especially us Gautengers, Colesberg is the stop over town enroute to the Cape and back again. Therefore one is normally tired when arriving and only looking for something to eat as well as a clean, comfortable bed at a reasonable price. We always stay at "Gabbles Inn", which gives us all the above, and it is close to the N1. We always go to "The Plattelander" restaurant for the best Karoo mutton dishes anywhere! Then on the morning of departure a quick stop at the Wimpy next to the N1 for breakfast and off you go. We also found the local residents to be very friendly and helpfull. Fanie le Grange

Usually we just drive thru Colesberg, if we don't overnight at the dam. This time we decided to overnight at Toverberg Guest house. We had some time to walk thru the streets and wow - what a treat! Such a cutesy or quaint little place! Everywhere the spoors of olden day visitations are visible. Some of the buildings (dwellings) are so old it's almost like traveling thru time and if you stop to listen carefully, you can almost discern the sounds of ox-wagons and oxen making their way up the main street. Because of being almost half-way between our holiday destination (Keurboomsriver) and our home - Polokwane - we would definitely overnight (or over-afternoon) here again!

Orange River Farm - We enjoyed our one night stay on this unexpected oasis in the dusty yet beautiful Karoo jewel! Laying comfortably on the banks of the great Orange River. The Room was comfortable, clean, neat and very well priced. A warm homely and friendly atmosphere meets one. The food was great. The kids could run around, swim and play after a long drive from Centurion. On our departure we wished that we could stay a little longer. - Nandi van der Merwe

I'm sure Colesberg has many hidden treasures, especially in the district, but for us this is a good stop half way between Johannesburg and Cape Town. There are enough shops to stock up and restaurants to have a meal if you don't feel like cooking (or your accommodation doesn't provide meals).

Our stop over at Colesberg was a one night stand, but good enough to remember the name. We where enroute from Gouritzmond to Ficksburg, and the locality of Colesberg was a conveniant stop over, and will in future be high on my list for conveniance. Even the dirtroad out the farm to our BB was friendly enough for my 2X4 "lowprofile" tyres. Louis Viljoen

My husband and I were passing through Colesberg on our way to Plett. The town has a lot of selected restaurants so a hot cooked meal in one of the restaurants was very satisfying. If I am to stay in Colesberg again, I will rather look for a much updated accommodation than Merino Inn Hotel. ~ The Venters on Colesberg

The approach into Gariep Dam Village from the N1 reveals a quaintly constructed town/village, as it is built on two distinct terraces on a koppie. Driving past the town and onto the dam wall, the breathtaking expanse of the dam starts to sink in. The Gariep Tented Camp is easy to find, and upon arrival one is immediately swallowed into the privacy of the well-thought out ground plan of the camp. There are five various sized tents, each with its own facilities, with all you need for a self-catering getaway. The sound and sight of the river right below you further soothes the nerves, and there is plenty of space for a lazy stroll or a brisk walk to the riverside fishing spots - all these with an amazing view of the dam wall scarcely a kilometer away! For a get-away and relaxing weekend or mid-week break, this one is recommended for those who like the feel of camping, but do not have all the required equipment themselves. Colesberg provides excellent accommodation ranging from rustic to luxury suiting all pockets. Stay a night, stay a week, you will find it peaceful and tranquil. The atmosphere created by its people is one of warmth and friendship with excellent hospitality. A town with many restaurants that offer the traditional Karoo cuisine or many other tastes to your hart's desire. It is ideally located central for travelers cris- crossing the country. Business or holiday, stay in Colesberg and experience traditional Karoo hospitality and leave refreshed and ready to take on the challenges.

We stopped in Coelsburg for two nights enroute to and from the Drakensberg. Its a perfect stopover location with a great choice of B&Bs and best of all, a well tended scenic towncentre to stretch your legs in after a long journey. The town has some stunning buildings and best of all the historic Plattelander Restaurant in Church St, which has wonderful Karoo inspired food in a warm farmhouse setting.

We only stayed over for one night at the Toverberg Guest House, but what an amazing experience. Every thing in our apartment was super clean and neat and our host was very friendly. Lovely wide open veld scenery, farms as well as the ever iconic "Coleskop" mountain originally known as the "Tower mountain". Go hunting for springbok on one of the many Colesberg farms, play golf, tennis, with many hiking and biking trails to enjoy as well. Indulge in one of the best exports from Colesberg, Karoo lamb. Rich in a unique taste due to a diet of wild herbs, such as origanum, rosemary, thyme, and other indiginous plants. For even more outdoor fun, visit the Gariep Dam, the largest man made lake in South Africa. Go fishing, water skiing, yachting, or on an exploration of the small islands that adorn the Gariep Dam. Colesberg is rich in historical sights of many battles fought in and around this amazing town. Come experience history, come experience Colesberg!

Ever been on a game drive in the Karoo? Did you know we can show you at least 10 species of game in an afternoons time? Kudu, Eland, Impala, Zebra and even a Hippo or 5? The game is situated on SafariPark and the Hippos at New Holme halfway between Colesberg and Hanover.

Colesberg is probably one of the quietest towns we have been to. If you are looking for crowds, shopping and nightlife, then this is not the place to be. However, if you feel like you need to get away from everything and everyone, then this is probably perfect for you. The people are very friendly and relaxed, and the mountains/koppies are lovely.

Having not stayed over in Colesberg since the mid 80's, it was great to be back in town. Was there on Sunday evening, so everything was closed except for The Plattelander. Thank goodness they were open. We had one of the nicest meals in ages and they were very reasonably priced. The highlight was the 'pampoen koekies' which were out of this world. Very nice.
