MUSIC IN SA - get down!

Get lost and found, feel safe and sound, get high and grounded – music makes our world go round.
From chilled to jivey, traditional to funky or melodic to dancey - it’s in our blood and itching in our feet. You can feel the rhythm of South Africa everywhere, from street corners where buskers hang out to blaring boomboxes from passing taxis. Kwaito, reggae, rap or jazz, it's wild and often LIVE, from urban township shebeens and trendy nightclubs, to dusty shanty towns or cultural villages, bushveld festivals and even concerts at botanical gardens.

The recorded sounds of the rainbow nation are the most diverse in Africa, ranging from centuries old indigenous African tunes to countless Afropop styles. South Africa’s recording industry is one of the powerhouses of African music, stretching back more than a hundred years. Most folk around the globe are familiar with the lilting violins of the Soweto String Quartet, the iscathamiya vocalizing of Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the African reggae of Lucky Dube (we miss you, Lucky!) But if you’re young, urban and out there then Afropop, hip-hop and kwaito is the beat that gets you grooving. Hybridised from Chicago house, kwaito’s downbeat vibe fuses with tsotsi taal, (incorrigibly rude and sexy gangster bad-boy lingo), local melodies and DJ rap.

Find out about the influences on indigenous music, genres and styles starting with the Khoi-Khoi ramkie improvised guitars of the 1700s to marabi, gospel, mbaqanga jazz, boeremusiek and bubblegum right up to the 21st century rolling hypnotic beat of kwaito, house, hip hop and Afropop.
