Barberton Manor Guesthouse

Barberton Manor Guesthouse was built in 1927 by the owner of a local gold mine in Barberton, the historical mining town between Nelspruit and Swaziland. The town itself still has some working gold mines, one of which is actually open to the public for underground mining tours and to view gold panning. It also showcases some Victorian houses and museums. The Sir Herbert Baker designed manor house is registered as a National Heritage Site and is also a landmark for the Barberton area.
The manor offers guests modern comforts but old trademarks have also been restored throughout the house. Surrounding the house is a 2 hectare botanical garden featuring about 200 plant species, creating a haven for birds and showcasing several trees and an aloe collection.

Five Assegais Country Estate

Five Assegais Country Estate features high, middle and low veldt  environs with every natural feature one could imagine from the second highest waterfall in Mpumalanga to many smaller ones which have cut dramatic canyons and valleys filled with giant tree ferns, ancient yellowwood trees, rare grasslands and wetlands filled with birds.
Historically this hill has witnessed action from the time of the San people until the feats of the Boer war.  South Africa's most loved dog hero, Jock
Of the Bush Veld, frequented the estate during the time that the Barberton gold fields were being hauled.  President Paul
Kruger, as a young man, built and established the dam and house at the head of the spectacular
Hell's Kloof Pass, a 400 meter drop from the summit of the Skurweberg to the Komati Valley.
The area of Machadodorp was the last centre of resistance to the British and was the de facto
capital of the country before Kruger was driven into exile.  This area is still famous for the battle of
'Berg en Dal' and the last great battle between the Boer and British Forces at Dalmanthue. This estate hid a group of 200 people for 2 years while they directed their war from this natural fortress.

Die Tuishuise

Die Tuishuise in Cradock has won the AA award for historical accommodation as well as a gold medal for restoration by the Simon van der Stel Foundation. Die Tuishuise consists of a street of 27 restored Karoo houses. The whole street has been renovated to depict Settler living at the turn of last century. (The houses date back to circa 1840).  Each house is decorated with its own distinctive theme of period prints and antique furniture to reflect an atmosphere of understated elegance, reminiscent of the lifestyles of the English and Dutch Settlers at the turn of the century.

Stellenbosch

Although Squirrel & Vine itself is not located in a historic building, the area in which it is situated is known as the historic core of Stellenbosch. Well-known Dorp Street with its famous Cape Dutch architecture is 100 meters from the apartment. Some other popular tourist streets nearby include Church Street with the Moederkerk (Mother Church), Market Street where the Tourism & Information Bureau is located (250 meters from the apartment), and lively Andringa Street. An excellent way to explore the area is to take a guided walking tour.
