The Caledon countryside is resplendent in bright yellow and gold patchwork hillside blankets of the Canola, Wheat and Barley fields, with the sheep dotted against the green of the pastures. Among the sheep are the Blue Cranes; Spurwing geese and Guinea fowls, foraging for the insects and seeds that the sheep uproot or disturb. Overhead the harriers patrol the skies in search for a careless rodent to turn into a meal, and on the dams bob Egyptian geese, ducks and other feathered relatives.

Caledon; situated about 120 km’s from Cape is for sure a hidden gem. This beautiful little town on the N2 has many things for tourist to discover. The mineral hot springs is a must visit for all and visitors come back time after time to relax in the restorative waters. From June to September the beautiful green landscapes coloring into golden yellow colors from end of September is any photographers dream. Not to forget the patches of yellow canola and off course the groups of blue cranes. One of Caledon's most famous tourist attractions are the renowned wildflower garden known for its scenery. Here is a wonderful hiking trails with bridges and green lawns. Make sure your camera to take a picture of the town by the famous Caledon Window Rock. For the more enthusiastic visitors make sure to visit Forest Adventures for the longest tree to tree slide in South Africa. At Dassiesfontein farm stall between Caledon & Botrivier you will for sure find some good country food as well as a souvenir or to take home and while in the area remember to do some wine tasting at Gabrielskloof Wine Estate.

200 years old with many heritage buildings, and so close to the N2 gives us a natural base camp advantage for visitors exploring the Overberg and the other 7 towns of the Cape Country Meander. Reasonable accommodation, very safe stays and stunning countryside with the rolling hills boasting the yellow Canola; golden wheat and barley; and the sheep and cattle dotting the grazing fields, with Blue Crane; Sacred Ibis and Forked tailed drongos patrolling the areas disturbed by the sheep as they graze, while Eagles and Harriers are soaring above.

Caledon is the capital of the Overberg but still has that small town feel. You can buy great homemade farm goods, visit the museums, take one of the hiking trails or visit the casino.
