No thirst like Bathurst?

Ja, it’s true, but that’s not what lures me. Forget the Rhodes students, the 1820 Settler descendant farmers have had decades of drinking practice. Nor is it the wonderfully kitsch giant pineapple - seeing is believing. It's peaceful, charming and quaint, resembling an early 19th Century English village. Grab a pint at the Pig and Whistle - the oldest pub in the country.

Bathurst is home to art galleries, the smallest pub in the world, a backpackers and a fairy garden. It's quiet, historic and peaceful. The locals are friendly but may turn on you if you hate organic food and art. It's a stone's throw away from Port Alfred and is home to the famous (possibly more infamous) ox braai at New Years. They block off the roads and a variety of braais litter the street. It's a three-day party and braai festival that has been a tradition for over nine years. It ... more
