This is insane but bring it on!
The annual Red Bull Big Wave Africa 2008 surfing event is done and dusted just two days into the waiting period - the Cape of Storms dished up some awesome waves on the 26th July of 2008.
In its tenth year, the Red Bull Big Wave Africa is one of just three big wave paddle-only events in the world. It has earned international recognition as one of the longest running big wave paddle-only surfing contests in the world – second only to the Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay, Hawaii. Big wave warriors from around the globe will be on 48 hour stand by to take on "Dungeons", an unpredictable, deep-water reef break which is one of the world’s top 5 big wave spots.
Just think about it, these extreme surfers take on waves that could be up to 40 feet or more, the water is damn cold, there are numerous big seals and worse, critters with huge teeth that like to eat seals! Their cerebral matter has to be severely overpowered by their adrenal glands.
Their mission – “to surf some of the biggest waves on the planet and grow the culture of big wave surfing on the Southern tip of Africa” (Times TBC).
Dates for the Red Bull Big Wave Africa 2009 have yet to be confirmed – the competition window usually runs towards the end of July untill the end of August.
So, where is Dungeons? Just off Sentinel Ridge in Hout Bay. A designated viewing area is set-up on the shoulder of the mountain. There is no parking but shuttle buses operate from the nearest car park. Or you could even jump on a boat and get up close and nervous! Take your binoculars.
