Ukukhula Komdanso Festival brings Dance that Grows

Where Durban
When 2008/06/24 to 2008/06/29

Woza! Set your spirit free and feel the vibrant beat of Africa through dance.
Head to the Elizabeth Snaddon Theatre to celebrate the joy of movement, rythm and youth with Jomba! The Centre for Creative Arts and Jomba! Contemporary Dance Festival presents “Ukukhula Komdanso Festival” - Dance that Grows, a dance platform that nurtures and celebrates youth dance and youth culture.

The Centre for Creative Arts and its annual contemporary dance platform, Jomba!, invites you to explore this year’s one week festival that celebrates the ‘growing of dance’ in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal. Aptly named Ukukhula Komdanso, this Jomba! dance offering is a series of local and international performances and dance collaborations that celebrate not only our growing and talented young dancers but dance that also grows a new audience.

We have carefully created a programme that presents top contemporary dance from South Africa in the form of special guests Moving Into Dance Mophatong (Johannesburg), and also revels in the international collaboration between hip-hop specialist and contemporary dance expert Daniel Renner (The Netherlands) as he puts Durban’s award winning Flatfoot Dance Company (and Guests) through their paces. The Centre for Creative Arts has also commissioned some of Durban’s award-winning choreographers such as Musa Hlatshwayo, Sifiso Kitsona Khumalo, Lliane Loots, Vusi Makanya, Varsha Sharma and Cato Manor Vibe!! to premier new work with young dancers. All these dancers are under twenty and will be working on a professional platform for the first time – a wonderful growing of dance indeed!

The festival also presents the annual Fringe and Youth Fringe which offers open platforms to new dance makers of all ages. These remain important platforms for the discovery of emerging talent. In addition, we are delighted to host a dance education mini-conference on Sunday, 29 June, where international and local experts in dance education and teaching will engage and debate with us around improved practice. The key note speaker is Adriaan Luteijn from Introdans (The Netherlands) whose dance education work has spanned nearly fifteen years.
